The guy who was the original voice of Tom Servo (Serveau) could come up with some really funny riffs but the problem was everybody would end up talking over each other. After they went to riffing these movies with a script, he couldn't adapt and departed after one season, that's when the Irishman (I can't think of his name at the moment) became the voice of Tom...he is also responsible for the absolute best Star Wars tribute short - Troops. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. It explains how Luke's aunt and uncle were killed (not the storm troopers fault) and shows the destruction of the Jawa's sand crawler. It is the best in terms of production value, acting, direction, writing ...everything about it is top notch quality (especially considering the time it was made...Tom Servo even makes a guest appearance in it). KEVIN MURPHY!...it took a while but I just remembered his name.

6:25 Hard to say, but I think this is another Monty Python reference, although it's hard to explain without the context: It's from the Killer Joke sketch. The Nazis have been taking heavy losses from the British Killer Joke (yes really) and want to get in on joke warfare. A labcoated scientist gives his best joke (in German) to a Gestapo officer and guard. The officer looks at the guard, looks at him, says "we'll let you know" in exactly that tone, then shoots him - dolly out to reveal a whole pile of identical dead scientists. It's the tone, I think, that really sells the connection... and Joel's bad dancing.

49:25 - May be obvious (thus the absence), but it's missing the Peter Pan reference annotation here.

Maybe I was jaded at the time, but when I first got to this episode I didn't think the move was that bad. It had a story! And a subplot. And they were connected. Some of the acting was good enough to make it immersive (not all), some of the dialog was enjoyable. For a goofy-ish movie I liked the bits of real-world cynicism (like the tacky "western" theme at the bar and the shitty overpriced drinks). I liked some of the cinematography and I liked the effort they put on the sets. Bar-scene aside, I thought they did a good emulating zero-gravity with the space scenes. While the robots dissed it, I actually thought some of the music was effective... the intro suck sucked, but i think putting a trumpet up to a mic with a delay effect is a stroke of genius... it sounded eerie in a good way and I think it worked in context of the lone vastness of outer space. I wasn't too big on the villains, they were too campy, clearly they were going for the James Bond angle.. but, like, the next colour big-budget 60s-y campy movie we'd get in MST3K is Catalina Caper, and that movie was a complete shitshow!

5:02 It's possible that bit about cartoons and understanding them is referring to cartoons made for soldiers in WW2 because many couldn't read and the army needed something everyone could understand.

After the third dancing scene, I became convinced that the director made half of this movie as material to satisfy his particular fetishes.

One annotation idea: at 52:07, when Joel says, "In a dirty space tumbler," I *think* it's from Bob Hope in Road to Utopia saying he wants a glass of lemonade "in a dirty glass."

I'd actually love a top 10 video of movies MST3K riffed that were actually kinda good. I think this one would definitely make the list along with This Island Earth. Manos would obviously be number one.
