Since the first Playstation was originally going to be some kind of add on to the SNES, i wonder if we would have gotten stuff like this, SNES games with enhanced CD quality soundtracks.
@jud6ment

You are kind of right. Every SNES game was programed to be compatiable with a SNES disc add on to improve music and possible other things. That is why it is possible with the talents of very awesome rom hackers to make this possible, because nintendo planned every game with the possibility to do this.

MSU-1 is amazing but there are some games where the artistic direction of the available replacement tracks just rubs me the wrong way. Of course one can’t be expecting commercial quality from freely available resources (my favorite MSU-1 hacks so far are putting the real songs into Rock N’ Roll Racing and the movie scores into Batman & Robin and the Super Star Wars games). I guess my usual preference is to not stray too far away from the original intent of the games and only improve and build on what’s already there. Generically re-orchestrated tracks and metal versions of everything are not my cup of tea but that makes up a big chunk of what’s available.
@breakfasthole3851

There's so much to getting a game soundtrack right. The idea of just switching out SNES music for CD quality doesn't work if the new music doesn't fit. A lot of MSU-1 tunes (not just in this video) have the wrong tempo, sound either too dry or too echoey (usually too echoey), have the wrong energy (drums are too heavy, other instruments don't fit) or are too loud. Some of these things are easier to fix than others. Even if everything fits, there's still the problem that these games are around 30 years old and people are familiar and attached to the way they've sounded for that long... so you can't change them and expect everyone to prefer an 'improved' version, even if the new soundtrack does a great job 😆

The music is good but, I dunno man….a lot of it doesnt fit the games at all. They sound way too…..epic? Too orchestrated? Not sure how to describe it. It just doesn’t fit. I also think the volume is set too high and drowns out the sound effects. Mega man X was a major exception though. Music is awesome. With that said, i think RPGs could benefit the most from upgraded music
@jud6ment
3 жыл бұрын
It is a personal preference, some people like it and some people don't. I wouldn't recommend a MSU-1 for a first time playthough of a game, it is more for replay value to shake things up as it is a very different feel. Anyway, you would probably be more interested in the "restored" music packs. I do not do any of those as we have plenty of people on Zeldix that do those, I mainly focus on bold soundtracks. You will want to look up Jammin Sam Miller channel and his Donkey kong country 2 and super Metroid music. The idea of those is to make small improvements, not dramatic ones with guitar solos in the middle of your mega man x game.

I seriously would love that to so dang much, we also have MET that has done the mega man zero series. However, highly highly doubt that will happen. This is already incredibly complex to do and the snes games are built to re-route music in the coding. It was always nintendo's intention to release an add on to the snes that will allow you to place in cds to match a snes game that would replace the music like this. This is what rom hackers are working off of to create this. The gb and nes games we have in msu-1 are actually being forced played through a snes emulator, so creating something that can be compatible without the use of snes emulators seems very unlikely, but anything is possible if you are a good enough coder.

I never had a SNES in my childhood, so now I am exploring the console's library without any nostalgia, but with historically accurate setup (junk CRT with RGB, SFC, FXPAK PRO). Sadly in most cases I fail to love MSU-1 mods. Here's why: 1. Mario and Kirby music was meant to be 80's Japanese jazz, funk and fusion. Fan mods make those sound like a high-school brass band. 2. Super Mario Kart is stupidly loud. 3. Legend of Zelda orchestration is just too heavy. It lacks lightheartedness and nuance of the original. 4. Final Fantasy VI should not be touched, as original is perfect in every way. 5. Heavy metal Donkey Kong? Really??? Imagine playing that in your parents' living room in the 90s. Mods that I liked: 1. Earthbound. First is sounds wrong, but quickly grows into you. 2. All of Quintet trilogy - those are original samples, but touched up. 3. Super Metroid Symphony by Blake Robinson is awesome. It is VERY different from the original, but captures and enhances the mode perfectly. I recommend it for the second playthrough.
