It was interesting, but part of my interest was trying to figure out what you were doing this for. Was the part you replaced giving errors or too dificult to use ? I wish you had provided a closeup at the beginning, showing how it worked before the change.

The one thing that I struggled with was hooking up the strut after cutting the metal strap off the strut. Then I figured that removing the vertical stop, levering the mill head up with a screwdriver, I was able to hook up the strut without trying to compress it.

Hello again Andrew, I've fitted the gas strut and it's made a vast improvement to the mill, so I just wanted to let you know and to thank you for taking the time to share this video. I hope you may be considering fitting a power feed to the X axis in the near future ! All the best, Brian

Hey Brian, that's great news. I really appreciate your feedback. Coincidentally about 6 months ago, Adam gave me a motor for the x-axis but I've not got round to fitting it. Not sure how the coupling might work and too many other distractions at the moment. All the best. Andrew

Looks like an excellent bit of work. Did I miss the design/spec of the bracket? Appreciate it's just a few holes cut in some steel bar, but it would be useful for a start point.
@learningturningmetal
4 жыл бұрын
Hi The bracket is about 9" long, 1" wide and 5/16" thick. The first hole is about 1/2" from the bottom. Then a series of 4 holes starting 7 1/2" from the bottom, spaced out 1mm. Hope that helps. Cheers Andrew

What size is the steel bar you used ( thickness & width)? I was planning to use a 3/8" x 1" aluminum bar I have (less weight). Don't think a 40 pound force offset by the ball would ever bend it. But I was thinking to cut a hole to not cover the pointer screw which would weaken the bar.
@learningturningmetal

Hi. My mild steel bar is also 1" x 3/8". I think aluminium would be fine. Good luck. Andrew

Nice one - the spring is useless on these as you show. When I 1st encountered the problem the head fell from almost it's full height and slammed into bed - had my hand been under the end mill (not spinning btw) it would have made a huge mess. I've still not addressed it and the spring often catches me out with horrid jerky movement so I'll be looking at the strut asap.

I was quite impress with the fitting of your gas strut, will the same work on my Sieg X3 which looks like a heavier machine to yours, best wishes Frank.
@learningturningmetal
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank. I don't know much about the X3, but I would imagine that it has a quill feed and that the head is moved up and down the column using a threaded rod. My sx2p doesn't have a quill feed and the head slides up and down the column with the support of a torsion bar. The torsion bar isn't very good, so that is where the gas strut is used to replace it. If however the x3 is of similar design to the sx2p then you would need a longer and far more powerful gas strut. I hope that helps. Cheers Andrew
