Still saddens me seeing this vid. The trains of my childhood. I'm very glad that a group of these classic cars have been preserved. Originally there were 10 but turns out now that a couple of more classic IRT cars that have been in maintenance service will become part of the "Train of Many Colors" too.

I couldn't agree with you I mean as kid born in NYC in the mid 1990s I just wanna say riding these redbird trains in the last 5 years of service from 1999-2003 were the best childhood years of my life and tbh I really wish that the mta would've given at least give these trains another 4 or 5 years I mean that would've been awesome but don't get me wrong I like the newer trains that are running now.

Bmendez378 I'm glad that you were able to experience riding these well built, classic trains. The new trains are nice, but to me the Red Birds are as symbolic to New York as The Yankees and the Empire State Building. I hope that I will be able to visit NYC and ride the TOMC.

You can go visit the NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn. They have a couple of Redbirds sitting in the station there with some of their older brothers and sisters.

These cars are a testimony to what American industry used to be. Able to build products that would last and last and last. The Redbirds even outlasted the factory that built them: The St. Louis Car Company. These subway cars could have been rebuilt again but of course the new trains have the new computerized gadgetry and use less energy. But I doubt they will last 40+ years.

God forbid we use the trains as little shelters for the homeless who have no roof but lets give room and board to some damn fish!

@ACLTony Exactly what I tell everyone. We need to bring back those old American car companys. Look at the R32s. They look and run great. The new trains are already starting to rust and have different problems.

I grew up with these trains back in the 1960s and early 70s. I was very fond of them. Dumping them into the ocean as artificial reefs? Seems to cone off as a good thing, but it makes one wonder if this does turn the bottom into a junkyard. Steel does rust and inspite of the small amount....asbestos is still asbestos. I wonder if the transit authority checked with historical societies to see if any of them wanted some of the Redbirds for other museums and tourist lines.

It is saddening Mustang. The strong, durable America we grew up in is gone with outsourcing, political correctness, and substandard quality the new norm. I would have loved to travel back to New York City one more time just to ride my #2 line on those redbirds, from Allerton Ave in the Bronx to 14th St. in Manhattan as I did in the late 60s. I'll cherish those memories.

Yes, still dumping our waste into water or the sea, like the Victorians did. Out of sight out of mind. Those old cars were probably more reliable and simpler to work on than their sucessors too.

@ACLTony It would have been so easy to retrofit these with newer seating, airconditioning and electronic whatever; yet as usual these boneheads in power just scrap them all. Here in Australia, they did a similar thing to a commuter train they call the Prospector. 7 diesel railcars, two unpowered railcars, whom faithfully served for 45 years. All bar two were cut up for scrap. The Australian navy decommissions warships by turning them int dive wrecks much like these railcars. Stripped down

That's the reason why they had the R62AS on the 7 Flushing line to replace all the Redbirds. Now they have the R62AS back on the Pelham 6 line one more time. The only thing we have left on the iRT lines is the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines. Pretty soon they are definitely gonna bring the Brand New R262/As comes to replace on the 1 3 6 S lines. Another thing they had to swap the R142As off the Pelham 6 line and brought the R142As and the R188s to the 7 Flushing line for CBTCS and the rest of the R142As that was on the Pelham 6 line were sent to the 4 Jerome Ave line.
