Wall has always been one of my favorite creature types since my first booster in 94, inspired by the original Wall of Stone. All these dramatic spells and monstrous creatures, and one caster just summons The Great Wall of China, essentially. The Great Wall of China that can be equipped with a sword, murdered, make a fatal slip, get wanderlust, and only stop one creature at a time, no matter how big it is.

Inanimate walls being classified as "creatures" has always been one of the flimsier game design decisions from a "flavor/lore/verisimilitude" POV in my opinion. As you point out, it certainly does lead to many silly interactions with other game mechanics that assume by default that all "creatures" are actually living beings capable of moving and thinking.

Well, if anyone wants to read a really long comment, here's a story about Wall of Roots and how confusing the rules of Magic used to be. Over in France, some guys showed up to a tournament with the then-most ridiculous combo of all time: Magma Mine, Wall of Roots, Stasis. Step 0: convince the judge staff that you can add mana BETWEEN TURNS. (The theory was that "between turns" was required to exist in order to determine whose turn it was.) Step 1: get all 3 in play. Step 2: Between turns, add lots of mana with the Wall of Roots. You're not restricted to once-per-turn because it's nobody's turn, and adding mana was faster than creature death in 1996 or 1997, whenever it was. And you didn't mana burn or lose your mana because "between turns" wasn't a phase, and mana was only lost at the end of a phase. Step 3: proceed directly to your upkeep (this is why you need Stasis), fill up your Magma Mine, and BOOM! Later that week, Wizards put the kibosh on it, but for a few days...
@shinjodun
2 жыл бұрын
I was going to make a comment about Wall of Boom. It should be mentioned that the between turns step was a thing, and this definitely worked under the rules at the time. The between turns step was in the rules for Time Vault specifically, as it was what they thought was the cleanest way for it to work then... and then this happened at a PTQ in France and the entire world did a collective WTF.

Wall of Blossoms + Overgrown Battlement is quite a potent mana engine that showed up in a couple of my casual multiplayer decks. Losing all your lands to the Kudzu crawling around the table doesn't matter much when you have two of each Wall in play and each Battlement taps for 4 green mana.

There are some crazy Walls in Magic's history. I started playing with Alpha cards - my older brother gave me all his cards when I was a kid - so I've been playing Walls since the beginning. Wall of Swords, Living Wall, Dark Maze, Wall of Stone...

Great video! I played MTG around Tempest-Urza block during my high school year and quitted at the end of Onslaught block (and came back in Kaldheim in MTA). At the time I started there were so many great walls which did not feature in the video. Wall of Net, Wall of Glare, Fog bank, Wall of Soul, etc. Looking back, it’s also very funny that my friends and I thought that Wall of Blossoms was the second worst of the bunch of 0/4 uncommon walls from Stronghold after Wall of Razors!!!! I played black/white using walls to stall opponents and beat them by using Pestilence for my first deck (I bought Precon “The Plague”. Then, expanded it with “Call of the Kor”.). This video just brings me back. Thank you!!!

Worth mentioning that Wall of Junk as printed was *not* a wall (it was errata'ed later), so it was able to attack. Obviously a 0/7 isn't going to achieve much offensively without help, but that huge toughness could do some real work if you can put some +1/+1 counters or pump effects on it.

1995/1996, Wall of Air was lowkey savage. Stopped a lot of key creatures dead in their tracks (Ernham Djinn, Serras, Sengirs, 2/1 Orders). I would run 2 main deck, 2 side, plus four Ghost Ships in a Millstone deck. Mixed results, but it was something everyone hated playing against. It was a real "grind" getting through all that toughness, regeneration and countermagic.

I've always thought Walls needed some sort of defensive ability to represent the player using them for protection, something like: "Tap this creature to redirect towards itselfa single source of non-combat damage at its controller or a creature with the same controller" to represent taking shelter from a fireball, etc.

Despite being a long term player, for some reason I absolutely misjudged Birth of Meletis when I first saw it - this being despite the fact that I've always loved Wall of Omens and include it in many of my Wx midrange/control/combo shells. I'd see heavy lifegain players playing it (you know the type; the ones that play Ajani Pridemate type creatures and have zero counterplay to sweepers), and I thought "damn, those players will search for any card with the words "gain life" in them and include it, even if it doesn't help their strategy at all. I can't even remember when, but at some point it dawned on me that, for most intents and purposes, it's Wall of Omens. Slight upside of lifegain and enchantment typing if that matters; slight downside of taking an extra turn to get the wall and not actually being a creature with an ETB. As soon as I realised - wham, it's now in a large number of my MTGA decks, including my favourite historic Orzhov control.
