This video clip documents the first powered tests of the current run of the MTH E44, equipped with ProtoSound 3.0 capabilities. Shown are Conrail units 4407 (ex-PRR 4407) and 4413 (ex-PC and PRR), headed westbound past the coach yard throat. This was shot with my Samsung J3V phone, so please forgive the slight hand-shake. For more information on the layout itself, please visit it's topic page on the OGR Forum at ogrforum.ogaug... . The units are fitted with custom-fabricated pantographs, and powered by live catenary. There is significant upward pressure exerted on the wire by the extended pantograph, which is noted by the wire-flexing action. This is noteworthy considering the wire is tensioned at several pounds per square-inch. The pantograph design calls for springs from Atlas pantographs to guarantee reliable pantograph/catenary interaction at higher current flow when pulling heavy coal trains.
As this is the first test with the custom pantographs, both pans were extended on both units to clean any non-conductive residue on the shoes. I found this to be helpful, even though both pantograph shoes were coated with silver conductive grease.
While I find the crew/yard chatter to be annoying, the fan sounds are excellent and accurate, as is the deep horn. Once again, the PS 3.0 sound system comes up with a winner.
The next videos will be of these units pulling a long string of empty scale hoppers. Thank you for watching.
