There are many signs of summer: baseball, long hours of daylight, campfires, open beaches, and so on. Here in MN, another sign of summer is the Minnesota Transportation Museum's deadhead equipment migration (ferry move) to Osceola, WI from St. Paul.
During the winter months (November through June) we perform routine or special maintenance on our equipment at the Jackson Street Roundhouse before returning to start a new operating season on the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway.
In year's past, the season started in early May. In 2018, the season was cut back to save from poor spring ridership to late June.
On June 19, MNTX (BN) EMD SD9 6234 and MNTX (GN) 325 led eight railroad cars on the spring move back to Osceola on a wet afternoon.
The first car is a former DM&E ballast car, one of eight donated by CP in late 2016, it hauled ballast to the roundhouse for track additions, going back empty to Dresser with four of its friends. The consist also included two RI commuter coaches, empire builder coach 1213, CNW/GN diner 1097, NP RPO 1102, CNW/GN coach 1096 and GN business lounge A-11.
If you're curious about "BN" 325, that's a rare SDP40, one of only six ever built in the US. It was built for the GN in 1966 and was donated to MTM in 2009, it is planned to be repainted into GN colors in 2019, making this the last time the two units will be BN together.
