Hello! I'm a health professional and a makeup lover, I just happened to come across your channel today. I'm sorry to inform that, dispite the benefit of evaporating faster, 99% alcohol is not effective for disinfection, it only stabilizes the existing bacteria. The only bactericidal form would be the 70% kind, and one would need to rub it on the surface on a certain direction and let it stay there for a couple of minutes. The lipgloss wand has many retention spots, no disifection method could work so fast as to allow you to put back a wand back into the product package. Even the alcohol itself is not enough to secure that there won't be some resistant form left, since there could be fungal and viral pathogens on a clients lips and these microorganisms are pretty tough to get rid of. There is no easy way! You really need to use disposable lip wands and mascara brushes in order to avoid contamination. There must be a more in-depth source of info on biosafety for makeup artists. I'll leave in on another comment in case I find one. I'm enjoying the channel and I'm looking forward for more tips on minimalism. :)

THANK YOU for this! As a licensed esthetician trained in sanitation and bacteriology, I often cringe watching makeup artists practice unsafe sanitation methods. Those of us who are licensed are required to learn this and prove it by passing our state board exams, and I wish there was a similar licensing program for makeup artists. Although unfortunately I've been told that even some professional makeup programs are teaching to use 99% alcohol, and since there's no required state licensing and inspections like with esthetics and cosmetology, there's no one really correcting them. :/ To the original poster (I think your name is Sanni?), you're clearly very dedicated to keeping your kit clean, and I hope this new info will help you switch over to more effective sanitation methods! Thanks for your videos!!

Kássia Silva so the alcohol is good enough to sanitize medical tools, but not good enough to sanitize makeup?

Only non critical medical tools with smooth even surfaces can be cleaned with 70% alcool once established the time that the substance stays in contact with the tool and the direction in which it is being swiped, but it will only be considered sterile once they go through autoclave processing. Makeup doesn't have a smooth and even surface and can't be autoclaved. You can't properly swipe all the bristles of a brush, for example...

Sanni, this was so wonderful! I have always wondered how makeup artists clean after using on clients. Nordstrom in the US is probably the cleanest I have ever seen. They use new mascara wands every time on clients. Their makeup stations are incredible. These tips are essential to all us makeup gals. Thanks so much, you are the best!!!

Another good tip, carry the little alcohol 2 x 2 alcohol wipes and use that wipe rims of bottles. I really like Kate by Rimel lipsticks they are $5 or NYX lipglosses, which NYX is a sister company of MAC. I just give the lipstick brand new to the client. They really like receiving the lipstick, so they can reapply during the day or depot the lipstick into containers and use a spatula to scope out the lipstick, put it on a metal plate and use a lipstick spoolie to apply the lipstick than spray down the metal plate and wash it off. I do not take chances of just spraying Lipsticks with alcohol because of the Herpes Simplex 1 virus. A person can have a Herpes sore lying right under the lips or forming on the edge in the inside of their lips and spraying alcohol on lipsticks is not enough to decontaminate lipsticks. If you are MUA and this is your business income, you can write off at tax time all of the products that you buy. So, giving a client a $5 dollar lipstick or lip gloss is no big deal. Once, When I give a client a lipstick or lipgloss, I just restock it. Going to CVS or a drug store to rebuy the lipstick that I gave to a client is not an inconvenance to me. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Love her videos, but on a serious note--use disposables and utilize stainless steel spatulas and palettes to scrape up the product you need. The only type of product that you can 'double dip' into is powder products, but saturate (spritz about 3-4xs as much as Sunny demonstrated) with 70% alcohol, as higher percentage alcohols evaporate quicker than they can effectively kill the germs. I appreciate that she wipes down her product containers with wipes. Wash your hands whenever possible in between clients and always use a generous amount of hand sanitizer in front of your client before starting your work.

Alcohol would kill certain types of bacteria. Spore forming bacteria, survives alcohol. I think the best is to use disposable wands and not double dip. Brushes, since those can be cleaned with soap, would be clean to re-use; w/o double dipping.

Oh, and what else do you do to keep your workspace sanitized?? Like if you have a setup for a client, how would you go about preparing for a client, and how would you clean your kit after a client?? I think that would be great to see too...

I don't feel so crazy now (I do this...and it's must me using my makeup). I take it one step further and i put the sanitizing wipe on a cotton bud and clean the lids of my creamy/liquid products...getting it out of the lids threads. yes, I have a problem. ;)

I noticed you mentioned 99% alcohol. I would recommend diluting it to make it 70-75% alcohol. 99% evaporates too fast to penetrate and sanitize your powders. The applicators that come with the liquid products tend to be hard to fully sanitize so I believe disposables are way safer. I LOVE that you mention the sanitizing products and I will be looking into them. Thank you for the informative vid.

Thanks for sharing your tips! So helpful :) do you ever use mascara and lipgloss disposable wands or just use the alcohol spray method?
@morganpollnow9478

i NEVER just spray my eyeliners, mascaras etc. i use wands and applicators. i normally use a brush with gel liner and spread it on a plate to apply to the client. i never dip back in. if i do decide to use a liquid or felt tip liner i just buy the $2 ones from E.L.F. and dispose of them when i am finished. i only do this on clients that i cant get a sharp line with a brush. not so much a waste of money if you're charging enough! but something to think about! also, 70% alcohol will disinfect powder products efficiently and effectively, but only when sprayed before and after uses. (for example, dont just grab a palette youve had for a year, spray it, and throw it in your kit!) that wouldnt be sanitary!
@morganpollnow9478

you can never be too careful when it comes to germs ans bacteria so although it may be easier for you to just spray everything, it is more important to take those extra steps to insure sanitation.

+Kim Mc What would you suggest instead of 99% alcohol as this is the industry standard for MUAs?
@kimmc3055
8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Because my background is microbiology and not cosmetics I had to do a little research before answering. I have not been able to find a scientifically proven method for disinfecting makeup without damaging the product. That being said, I would suggest using disposable (one time use) applicators to prevent contamination from occurring in the first place. Additionally, if cleaning the outside of the containers is what you're after, a 70% isopropyl is more effective than 90% as it does not evaporate as quickly and the product is then in contact with the item for a longer period. And it is available in handy little single use towlettes. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you.... I just didn't want Sanni to have a false sense of safety using cosmetics that had be "cleaned" this way. An excellent resource if you want more information is the CDC website. Just input disinfection in their search bar and you'll have loads of great info.

Do you use same spray method to your brushes? And should powder products be almost wet that germs will die?

my pharmacist told me or rather reminded me that there is no such thing as 99% alcohol. 99% alcohol would immediately go up in flames and is rather dangerous. the maximum alcohol that we can handle and are "allowed" to us ist about 96%. this 96% alcohol you usually don't get in supermarkets, but definitely in pharmacies. so 90% or 91% is not the max. alcohol and propably has not the same effect like the ~96% (aka 99%)ones. he said, that the label 99% is actually inappropriate and e.g. in Austria not allowed as it is not true. it is used like a labelname to make the customer recognize it as the max. alcohol. to see easily that this product contains the maximum concentration of alcohol (as a label with 100% is definitely not allowed in any country as is would be a lie)
@JRoseTTV
6 жыл бұрын
You actually want to use 70%-91% alcohol so it allows time for the alcohol to get into bacteria cell walls. 99% alcohol is useless.
