I did 5 years of all phases of drywall and steel stud framing. Wet sanding is a good tip, have you tried it? Also if you run your mud each time with a wider taping knife, you might get cleaner results. I might would try priming the osb and then doing a heavy knock down with a really wide knife. What you do is spray the mud on kinda heavy and let it set up just a bit, then lightly drag the wide knife down the wall. This method hides a lot of imperfections m. Anyway I think what you did looks fine for a more rustic look.

I've done stuff like this but use the fiberglass tape for inside corners and joints. Metal corners for outside corners. Have also used latex calk but had to go back over it after it cracked. I used OSB for the strength primarily and the joint compound treatment for the looks.

Using tape for the joints is the ways to go. I use 1x3 common to trim the outside corners and I like the look. Also, I have had no problem with latex caulking cracking and have used this method for many years.

With plywood costing so much I am also using OSB. I’m worried now with OSB being in such high demand due to expensive drywall and expensive plywood, that the OSB is also going to cost tons of money. Anyway, I’m going to also buy all purpose mud for $8 and apply the mud on the OSB. I’ve never done this before so I’m hoping it will turn out good. My project is a cabinet in the garage. So it’s really not a big deal if it comes out okay or not. I am however using this project as an experiment to see how well I do. If I end up doing well, this will propel me to new levels and techniques. I’m actually very excited to see someone else doing the same thing and was successful at doing it. I’m glad you liked it. I’m going to try to completely cover the usb so no one will know. I want to see if I can actually fool my friends and family and make them think that this is not OSB and just regular plywood. Again I’ve never done this before so I have no idea if it’ll come out any good. Thanks for sharing your video and I’ve smashed that thumbs button!!

Good advise, one coat of easysand 45. Work fast it gets hard in 30 minutes With a with a drywall knife cut off all the high spots. Ready for final coat. If you have time 90 will work as good just the OSB absorbs more water out of the coating.. Use mesh tape on the seams. If you are only one tapper, half a bag at a time. 2 nd coat can be regular mud We do this in Garages when they want it finished off and want to hang stuff on the walls.

I applied mud to OSB in a large closet 10 years ago and it's held up. The closet was a shear wall in an old house which is why I used OSB. I used general purpose mud but I don't think it matters.

Sounds like a great idea. If I do this again I will caulk joints with painters latex. It is not to bad but there are a few hairline cracks that are barely noticable.

Good job Ed. One local guy to another, after looking at your process, it looks good however after reaching the final stage you did before paint there was an opportunity to add a final light texture coating. I realize it's a back room and form follows function but also feel that for the time it takes, one final texture coat would make your work sparkle

If you faux finish the paint where you apply a darker base paint and let it dry, then go over with a lighter shade or contrasting color paint that is applied with a "rag-on" or "rag-off" technique, the imperfections of the mud coated OSB with look like it's part of the faux finish intent of the paint design giving added texture but camouflaging the OSB strands into the paint scheme.

Great video ! I am going to try using a grooved trowel for my first coat of Beadex general purpose drywall mud over osb . I want to build an even depth of mud. Let it dry . Then repeat with a long trowel. Will use a grooved trowel same as what is used for tile adhesive. . If I succeed I should get the same look as fully finished sheetrock. If I don't succeed , I will know that experiment did not work. . I will do my final coat with a 20" trowel so im hoping to get a nice flat surface .

@@EdwardHomerVICI should say, a notched trowel. 1/4" notched. And prep the osb with a solution of 60/40 water and yellow wood glue. Roller it on. As soon as it's tacky start with the mud.

Great video! I've been reading other forums on using mud over osb and they talk about how the osb can flake and bubble. Have you had any of that happening over time? Someone had suggested an oil-based primer to use as a sealer before mud is applied. Did you have any kind of sealer before you applied the mud? I'll be building soon with SIPS panels which have an OSB skin, so I'm wondering. Really love your results.

Still holding up? I am renovating a large garage loft. That has osb hung already. I like this idea. Drywall sucks. Did you use any bonding agents? I wonder if some sand in the first coat would be good or bad. Looks good man, drywall is too flat and boring anyways.
@EdwardHomerVIC

Holding up fine. had people living in studio for 2 winters, so showering etc every day. No bonding agent, just slapped it on. One thing I will do different next time is use a sponge instead of sandpaper to knock off high spots.

I'd be very concerned about long term cracking. OSB isn't terribly stable and will expand and contract with the seasons and with moisture absorption. Of course if it's just a little studio it likely doesn't matter. 😄

How did you cover the corners and seams? Also do you think you could roll on the mud? For a textured look?
@EdwardHomerVIC

The corners I used painters latex caulking, have been using that for years with drywall as well. The seams I just slapped the mud on and they don't look great. I think the roller is a great idea. I would apply the mud first then roll it for the finish. If you try that please share a video or photo here. cheers.

I should add I use the latex caulking on the inside corners and trim the outside corners and doors with 1x3. Rick suggested fibreglass tape for the joints and that is a good idea.
