Hi Nicola The 1942 cut halfpenny,...it's wartime, a couple perhaps are being separated by the war, he's being posted overseas so he takes a new halfpenny coin and cuts it in two, gives one half to his love, and keeps the other half himself...as a reminder that the two 'halves' will someday be reunited? a bit soppy I know! but... As to how it got in the river...maybe he never returned and.......now THAT is SOPPY!!. just a thought. Best wishes as always and a great video Chris.

'Half a sixpence 'is from the musical starring Tommy Steel based on the H G Wells' story Kips. There was a title song: Half a sixpence/is better than half a penny/Is better than half a ha'pny/ Is better than none/ It's a token of/our eternal love etc, etc I'm guessing that there was no sixpense in the pocket or purse at the time so had to settle for a HA'PNY ! Mind you - thinking laterally, I have never read Kips BUT he might have written HA'PNY. The composer & lyricist might have changed ha'pny for sixpence depending on whether it scanned better and also most composers, forever keep their eye on the American Broardway market and would hardly want to obfuscate the semantics as American Producers would prefer the simplicity in language.

Pity that ha'penny wasn't "cut coinage"; coins made to be cut in half or quarters for small change. That would be a really good find, they were originally made of silver. The word farthing was derived from 'fourthing', cutting a silver penny into quarters.

My gosh you make good videos. I love bumble bees and honey bees, even though my favorite aunt, Erma, died from a bee sting. She and her husband John were BEE KEEPERS for years! Go figure. Oh, here's something I found online (of course); "Matt Braddock, VC and bar, is a fictional World War II bomber pilot who first appeared in prose adventures the story paper The Rover in 1952, and later as a comic strip in The Victor (1961-83) and Warlord (1974).[1] Some of his stories were published in book form as I Flew With Braddock." I am still amazed at how much stuff you find, and how you can even spot a lot of the things you do find. I am indeed impressed! I have been "magnet fishing" for about a year (finding mostly rusty iron) and metal detecting once... so far... finding... not a lot. Please keep it up.

Nicola, I love how sharp-eyed and enthusiastic your viewers are in guessing at the ID of your finds. Even less than perfectly correct answers are interesting. I wondered if the coat of arms could be part of either a cast or molding process in clay or crockery. Lead is relatively easy to shape and carve but not very durable exposed to heat or weather. ( I hope the losenge is a key to the crest answer) Regarding the brass object, it does look like an Enfield oiler case but none of the images I've seen have the longitudinal grooves. Before I saw suggestions that it is an oiler I had a bought it was some type of adjustment nob for an instrument, site, optical, etc.that could explain the evenly placed grooves around the middle. The weight, if it's solid brass with perhaps the remains of a steel center shaft ought to be greater than a rifle oiler.( Which, by the way, has a small spoon-shaped end down inside the reservoir sort of like the working bit of a mascara tube, not that I know how to use it). If it's really an oiler the corrosion under that cap has surface corrosion at the edge of the threads and there could still be a perfect insides to it. Anyway, love you adventures. Take care.

On the Ottoman coin, the symbol in the center of the obverse, which in this case is the side opposite the side with the date, is the Tughra of the Ottoman sultan at the time the coin was issued. For the numerals, look up Ottoman numerals, as they are slightly different in form from Arabic or Farsi numerals. If the date turns out to be before 1840 in the Gregorian calendar, it will be a date in the Hijri calendar, but post 1840 would be in the Rumi, or Ottoman fiscal or administrative calendar.

It sounds a tad morbid, I know, but your half-a-body lead figure reminds me a LOT of the bog-bodies that are found sometimes in Ireland and elsewhere in peat bogs. O_O!!! Wonderful video, though; that little farthing is just beautiful, and I hope someone's able to definitively identify that foreign coin-- I have a feeling it's a lot older than it seems. I'm curious about the metal; is it brass? Seeing the yellow gleams, my first thought was gold; but you say it's sturdy, and gold that thin would be battered beyond belief and probably fragmented. That butterfly looks very Art Nouveau to me; wonder if it was once enameled? Thank you so much for posting the info on the bomber pin-- I too hunted around to try and spot it somewhere online, only to fail; so it's nice to find out where it came from. Kenny, I totally salute your research skills!

Re: Coronation medalion (?): I was 7 in 1953 when the Queen was crowned. . Nicola, I'm sure you get more messages than you can respond to, but try to do a reply to this one because I am especially excited. . For starters, think Turkish, not Arabic. . At 13:25 you show the first item you picked up on camera for this video. I was struck by what appeared to be a tughra on its face. That is a Turkish emblem, often of a Sultan. It was used in Turkey in lieu of a coat of arms because of certain Moslem prohibitions on imagery. . Here is this, copied and pasted: "A tughra (Ottoman Turkish: طغرا, romanized: tuğrâ) is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. It was also carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign." . Look at these: www.google.com/search?q=tughra&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwikgJLZrsHjAhXIW80KHagxBagQ_AUIESgB&biw=1349&bih=664 . I would be very interested if you identify this as I see it.

Maybe the little dog is.....’Lieutenant Dunne presented the fifth Pekingese to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who named it Looty.’ I would assume since Looty was so popular a few charms would have been made of her.

Could the charm at 18:30 be Peter Rabbit? Although, it appears somewhat sinister to me, so I wonder if it could be the image of a flying monkey from the Wicked Witch of the West, scourge of Oz? ;-))
