Qingshui Temple, located at the intersection of Kangding Road and Changsha Road, is primarily dedicated to "Qingshui Zushi" and is thus known as Qingshui Temple or Zushi Temple. In Taiwanese folk tradition, Qingshui Zushi is also referred to as Zushigong, Black-Faced Zushi, Penglai Zushi, or Falling-Nose Zushi, among other names.
Qingshui Zushi was a person from the Northern Song Dynasty, born in Fujian Province. His secular name varies in different accounts, with some calling him Chen Zhao, Chen Ying, or Chen Zhaoying. From a young age, he practiced Buddhism and achieved enlightenment. He once built a small retreat in the mountains of Penglai for his spiritual practice. The cave's water was clear and cool, hence the retreat was named Qingshui Temple, giving rise to the name "Qingshui Zushi."
According to legend, while Qingshui Zushi was meditating in Qingshui Temple, demons tried to harm him by setting a fire that blackened his face, but he remained unharmed. This story led to the name "Black-Faced Zushi." The title "Falling-Nose Zushi" comes from another tale: whenever a disaster was about to strike near the temple, his nose would detach and fall off as a warning to the residents and followers.
The temple's interior features intricate brick carvings of dragon and tiger motifs on two walls. The main entrance is adorned with a couplet: "For Qingshui, for Penglai, this place represents the Dharma realm; with a golden body, with an iron face, entering the gate reveals the true form." These artworks date back to a major renovation in 1817. Notably, the temple also houses an imperial plaque bestowed by Emperor Guangxu, inscribed with "功資拯濟" (Meritorious Deeds and Salvation), adding historical significance to the site.
Overall, Qingshui Temple, with its rich history and cultural significance, stands as an important center of faith for Taiwanese worshippers.
