This tutorial is exceptionally well done. Laser-focused and incredibly helpful, especially for those who are editing Events with multiple cameras creating coverage. Loved the tip on blading an angle that may have some different timing from the monitoring angle, and using a Compound Clip to do your Picture in Picture effect was a nice little bonus. That Picture in Picture effect is soooooo helpful. One of my favorite Effects, and I use it almost daily. Great vid, Dylan!

Oh that's a great way to do PIP. I usually drag and copy the multicam on top of itself and change the angle and resize it. Which means for every instance I need the PIP I have to do the same thing. It is not very time consuming using opt+cmd+c/v from the previous PIP I prepared but with your way I can simply create an angle with PIP and switch to that whenever it is needed. Perfection!

Agreed! Great use of a multi-cam clip… which opens the door to be used for so many things that require repetitiveness. Heck even titles or effects or anything that’s applied to the same clip. It’s like an active audition that will never be discarded.

I used to edit five and six angle Multi-Cams, some angles with cameras that start and stop, for a large corporation and the MC in Final Cut is the best! But, there's so much more that the Multi-Cam in Final Cut can do. - I cannot stress enough the power of using First Marker for Angle Synchronization. It'll speed up the sync of angles MUCH faster in that Final Cut will first look at the first marker because it's only a guide and then Final Cut will ONLY match the audio around the first marker to fine tune the alignment of the whole clip. FAR FAR faster than letting Final Cut examine audio of the whole timeline of each angle to find a match. It's night and day. To prove how well it works, set the first marker for each angle but don't be too careful. Be a frame or two or three off. When Final Cut sync's everything quickly, zoom in tight to the markers and you'll likely see them not perfectly aligned to each other. Instead Final Cut only used sound sync just in the small area around the first marker to ensure perfect sound sync for the whole clip. That, even though the markers weren't perfect. For extra credit, you only need to put the first marker on the first clip in angles where you have multiple clips. Because of embedded timecode, all the rest of the clips will be properly placed in sync away from the first clip (see next tip). Really, if your clips are long, you'll go from getting lunch to wait for sync, or be done with it within a minute or so. Amazing. - If you have a camera that starts and stops, then give all the clips the same camera name so that they will all be on the same angle timeline. Otherwise, they'll each have their own timeline and that'll drive you crazy! As said above, only the first clip in an angle with multiple clips will need the first marker. - Another benefit of First Marker is that you don't have to have sound. Use something visual to place First Marker. If later you see that the angle without sound is slightly out of sync, you can step into the MultiCam and select the no-audio angle and then use the period and comma keys to adjust the clip left and right until you see perfect sync. - The MC's I edited were usually in noisy rooms. When there were two or more people in the shot, I instructed the crew to put each voice on either it's own independent track, or on one side of a stereo track. I would change the the Stereo track to Dual Mono so I could isolate one voice while muting the other mic so to cut down on the room noise. One trick it used was to ... - ... duplicate the two person shot so that you had two angles with the same shot but one angle had only the guy on the left and the other angle had the guy on the right so that when I changed the angle using the Video and Audio mode from one guy to the other, the visual was unchanged but now you had the other mic on and the first mic muted. Talk about a fast way to edit sound! But, what if they talked over each other for a few words? ... - ... Remember that you can drop down the audio track away from the video and extend it across an angle change. For those few words where they talked over each other, both people will be heard but you'll reduce the room noise when the overlap ends. - It's not mentioned but you can can change the Monitoring Angle to be any angle that serves your purpose. I sometimes had to make a new angle, insert a clip, then make a change to my monitoring angle so that the added clip could better be sync'ed. - Did you know that while the MultiCam is opened so you can work on the angles, you can change which angle is visual and which angles are heard to help you make adjustments but those changes inside the MultiCam have nothing to do with how the main MC timeline (with the MC closed) is seen and heard? So, don't be afraid of messing things up with MC timeline you're editing. - I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting at the moment but this is a good start. Thank you Dylan! DonSmith.TV

Perfect Dylan, the FCBro is my preferred source of Final Cut Pro information. But can you you explain if there is a way to do Multicam cutting AFTER the clips have been timed right and placed on the timeline? It is a bit confusing how to handle this, once you got it all right and you need to start over with a Multicam clip instead of what you already got. I wish I could combine 2+ tracks on timeline and combine them and then select camera A or B back and forth for the entire length. Possible?

I already cut the interview with the A Cam and thought I was going to have to re-edit the interview but deleting and adding the angle fixes everything. I don't know if its a glitch but it seems to not want to do a color space override unless you change it prior to making a muticam sequence.

Okay specific question for you. I culled down an entire interview with three camera angles. Is there a button that allows me to change all my camera angles at once after I culled it down? Mostly because i want to export camera angle 1, 2, & 3 with the sync audio for my client. And since the timeline isn’t one long clip because I culled it down to all the best takes they are all one camera 1. Normal process is just manually hitting option command left or right then shift to the next clip with the arrow keys until I change all the camera angles to the second and repeat the process to the third. But is there a way to change them all at once?

The limit for the multicam angle viewer window is 16 angles at a time (2,4,9 or16). However, you can cycle through the the banks of 16 at at time so that if you have, lets say 32 angles you can cycle through the first 16 in one bank and the next 16 in the other bank. I believe the maximum number of angles you can build in a FCP multicam sequence is 99 angles of video.

@luxevagabonds
Жыл бұрын
As always amazing video. Quick question: What if you also have an audio track from an external device and the goal is to only use that audio (and none of the cam audio, aside from syncing)? Other tutorials online talk about having to first sync an external audio track with one of the cam clips before pulling everything into a multicam clip. Is that the solution or can the audio clip be one of the clips used to form the multicam clip, so that it's not specifically attached to one cam angle? I followed your tutorial and pulled in 3 cam angles and one master audio track and it sync'd everything. But when I disabled all of the cam audio, there was no sound at all. The audio clip is still enabled and plays on its own, but not as part of the multi-cam clip. I'm sure I'm missing a step. Hoping audio track can be added later, as there are occasions when editing will begin on a multicam project and the audio track comes later from the sound person.

Dylan, how do I extract a multicam clip to the timeline? If I have a section where I need to use the stabilizer, for example, I can't apply it to a multicam clip, I would need to extract it. Hi Dylan. My fcpx can't handle multicam. I have 4 cameras and 4 video files from each of them. By copying your actions - fcpx - it creates a multicam with files from 4 cameras, but not synchronized. All files were moved on the timeline - as if one after the other and, of course, 4 cameras under each other. I don't know how to fix this problem - is it simply that fcpx can't cope with such a number of files? Do they have to be single files from each camera without cuts? Do I need to add one file from each camera? In my case, the multicam option does not work properly.

Let me preface this by saying I am just learning the Mac system and FCP in particular. I am coming over from a PC and Adobe CS6 which I have been using since 2005. I am really beginning to appreciate the MAC environment So, no offense Dylan, I just think that your presentation moved along too fast without any in depth explanation of the processes. By the time I reached 7 minutes I was so lost I just stopped watching. I am sure that someone with more experience with FCP than I currently possess would have no problem with your presentation but when I saw “Complete Guide” in your title I was expecting more fundamental instructional. However I am now motivated to obtain some basic information on this feature of FCP, roll up my sleeves, and apply good old trial and error to learn it. So in that vein your presentation was a success. Thank you.
