Great job Joe. Btw those Braze High Score Saves kits have individual sound tests among other diagnostics. They are well worth adding.

I was in London this week and a shop had a old WWF WrestleFest arcade machine but it had a purple tint on the screen, they told me it was going to the dump in the next few days and they was replacing it with a doodle jump machine, it was heart breaking.

WTF is wrong with those people? All they have to do is put a for sale sign on it and get 100 bucks out of it, somebody will even pick it up and save them the trouble.

Greetings from Ontario, Canada.Nice explanation of the schematics Joe. I played this at our towns hockey rink all the time along with asteroids when I was a kid. Probably is the game that got me hooked on arcade games. I have both of them in my collection now with the multi game kits. Keep the videos coming.

Always great videos here,really like how you explain what's going on and how things work. Space Invaders might be a simple game by todays standards but I reckon it has some of the best sounds. Keep up the good work guys:)

Yeah, the 556 timers make the sounds and external resistors and capacitors set the frequency. If things sound really off, it might be time to change the capacitors and/or resistors that are connected to the timers.

That's such a clean looking chassis! I've read about putting them in the dishwasher to clean them...mine is INSANELY DIRTY! Do you recommend the dishwasher method?
@LyonsArcade
4 жыл бұрын
I've never done it, but theoretically it shouldn't hurt anything as long as you let it dry. Dry dry dry dry dry dry dry. Then let it dry some more :) The only thing that will hurt it is if it turns on while wet, you can spray it off with a garden hose as long as it's completely dry before you plug it in. I've heard of many people that put them in the dishwasher, so i'm sure it's not a problem.

Nice one Joe. Those 7411's are just being used like buffer transistors, since they tie all the input leads together. Tantalum's are notorious for either working, shorting or opening with age. It sucks when you've got a bunch as noise decoupling caps for all the IC chips on the +5 vdc power rail. It's like playing hide and seek with all the good ones. I hate it when they short because the let all the pretty blue magic smoke out of the IC you want that magic blue smoke to stay in. Super find on the CRT pin and the transistors. Loved the video, thanks for sharing. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Okay you found the comment I was looking for! I was going to bring up tantalum caps and bypass caps specifically when they're tantalum. A lot of times when you have over equipment like that and it's got tantalum bypass capacitors usually whatever I crossed when I accidentally let a magic smoke out sometimes it's just working and then bang quite literally literally. Sometimes when first turned on when I'm working on something for someone or just stop playing in use and then poopsie Magic Smoke. I have realized at least 90% of time maybe more chances are somewhere it's a tantalum cap somewhere in the device. Those things are notorious for this again you probably are where most people are that are seriously into Electronics. Also I cannot remember what you call these capacitors it's the ones that are used generally has noise suppression capacitors they're the ones that have usually the clearish metal film capacitors. Can't remember what you call them. But those things really suck when they go out also a good idea to take care of that if you know the device has them before you even turn it on. You could really go by Dave Jones Mantra on that one don't turn it on and take it apart. But in this case either a remove the offending capacitor or replace it with the proper one one that will not do that as readily. Sometimes you can get away without that particular capacitor in circuit but may not be advisable but that is up to the repairer of the device. Frankly I don't support removing components from a circuit they're there for a reason. But there are some cases where capacitors need to go in some circuit designs but that's the exception not the rule. But back to the other capacitors I was speaking about earlier. It's not just it stinks when one blows up causing you trouble it literally stinks. One of the worst smells electronics that can happen I may be mistaken but it's memorable to say the least. Seen several videos in which this was the case eevblog and others. Also a lot of retro computer videos have had this happen on camera. If anyone knows which type of capacitor that is and the acronym for it let me know please comment.

My game has no sound and it’s not reading the coin switches so I can’t even start a game. The monitor works fine and the “home” screen pulls up. Any idea what might be wrong with it?
@LyonsArcade
3 жыл бұрын
You only get sound if you start a game, so the sound might be fine. Sounds like the coin switches don't have a ground, or something along that line, you'll have to check out the wiring and see what's going on.
@tylerdurden7067

@@LyonsArcade Ok, so I checked the ground to the switches and the coin door and it’s all got continuity to the ground on the line cord. The switches test good. I’ve got -5dc on one side of the switches. I’ve got continuity back to the connector at the board on both wires. Bad daughter board?

AH no, it's not always good for the other components on the board. You can get away with it most of the time, but it's usually better to just troubleshoot it, if it's a board you care about. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya
