Experience one of the first journeys filmed on MUNI's new Siemens S200 LRV4 trains. This ride is on the N Judah, from the Inner Sunset at Judah and 9th to the heart of the Financial District at Embarcadero.
The two-car train featured in this video was comprised of trains 2014 up front and 2005 in the rear, the latter of which is where this was filmed in
2005 was one of the first LRV4s to enter revenue service in 2017; since then, dozens of new cars have been delivered from Siemens' factory in Sacramento, and over a dozen one- and two-car train sets can be found navigating all lines in the Metro system. The new trains are much quieter and more reliable than the 90s-era Breda cars they will eventually replace, which have been marred with technical and functional problems since their inception.
Three-car LRV4 trains are currently being tested on some lines to be used during peak hours and when the San Francisco Giants are in town.
After many complaints from passengers about the longitudinal seating with no "butt dents," SFMTA has floated a design change to Siemens that would possibly make one side of the train cars have forward-facing seating and would bring back the seat indents. (We support this, only because it would make it easier to film on these new trains). The first car with this type of modification would enter service in 2020, possibly to be dubbed the "LRV5."
Expect more LRV4 footage soon, as we attempt to film more lines on these new trains.
