This has to be one of the greatest movies of its type ever made. Seriously. I've watched it so many times that I feel like I'm a blood relative of some of the cast and a working associate of the others. The butler and I went through the same training. I was a police officer with McDonald & Curtin. Frank Baldrich and I have been friends since our High School days, and I introduced him to Linda, his future wife. Steve and I have been friendly competitors as authors for many years. Larry Dearden and I are brothers. I've known Dr. Carroll for many years, ever since he treated my first gunshot wound. I helped Milton Parsons get his job as chauffeur for Frank Baldrich. I really liked Nan, but I stepped aside in favor of Larry, who adored her since childhood. I liked Jerry, and I really liked Peggy, but I gave my heart to Betty, even though she's a real screwball. And that's all simultaneously. Now, don't tell me that that isn't a skilled presentation for the viewer!

Not bad for a 1940's remake, but the version of a decade earlier is more of a Gothic mystery--THE SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM. A second version dates from 1938 (HALLIWELL'S FILM GUIDE). I wish the print used here had been better; it looks like a copy of a copy.

I think the script writers ran out of plot lines and decided to make the three female singers the focus of the second half of the movie, turning it into a musical comedy. In the end, the writers decided pin it all on the doctor and have Steve give the audience a quick explanation as to the reason for the first murder and Larry's subsequent murder. Not a good movie.

You've just explained why I no longer go to 'the movies'. It's all sex scenes and foul language to make up for weak scripts and poor acting skills. The violence, however, is too deeply ingrained in people everywhere to ever be deleted. Look at a Roy Rogers movie, where there is plenty of action, gunfire, and horses, and without the nudity and rotten language. His movies are classics, while last week's blockbuster will be forgotten in a year or two and the cast members will probably be in AA, rehab, jail, or divorce court.

Handsome Bill Williams was married to stunning Barbara Hall. Believe they had a number of children when he became very ill. Barbara stayed by his side for many years. Bill passed away at a young age. That's Barbara HALE, not Hall. They had three children, one of whom was William Katt, who played Paul Drake in some of the later, feature-length Perry Mason specials. Katt was Bill Williams' real last name, and so his son used that, instead of Williams. Bill Williams was also on horseback, as Kit Carson, 1951-55 in the TV series.

They were scripted to come across like the Andrews Sisters. Betty Kean, the tall one, comes across as a blend of Patty Andrews and Joan Davis. Grace McDonald looks much like Maxine Andrews. June Preisser, the small blonde, doesn't quite match up to Laverne Andrews. At least the three of them don't fight like the Andrews Sisters did in real life.

I was surprised to see I.A.L. Diamond as the co-screenwriter for this project, but his witty touches show throughout. Great mix of comedy and mystery, will enough silliness to keep things moving. The three singers are excellent together. The girl who played Peggy, Grace McDonald, was the sister of the underrated film/stage dancer Ray McDonald (BABES IN ARMS, BABES ON BROADWAY, GOOD NEWS).

Grace McDonald made her last film in 1945, got married, moved to Minneapolis (MINNEAPOLIS!), had children, and died in 1999.

So many costume changes for the singing trio in one little suitcase.

Yes, I caught that at about the same time you did. Probably makes it simpler as they arrive and leave from the mansion.
