Hasselhoff isn't my favourite Hyde, but I really love the ensemble here. I really love the other versions, but they always cut out all the dialogues and that bugs me, because they make that number so much more fun. So I guess it's safe to say that this is my favourite adaptation of this number so far.

I just realised that the line "seen walking with his daughter, a moment prior to slaughter." Is referencing the age of the girl the bishop was with before he was killed. I think Hyde makes a comment about her age before he kills him too.
@maybelinefox3878

And directly after that they say "A shepherd tending to his flock. He died in a London slum, a slave to martyrdom". Often times people of a clergyman's flock are referred to as if they're their children. So she was his "daughter" despite the fact he definitely doesn't have kids because she's supposedly a member of his flock. So what's happening here is they're refusing to see the truth of the situation. He died near a brothel, and was seen with a young girl he was not related to, yet the people force themselves to believe he was there for charitable purposes and was trying to help the people of the slums and was bringing this girl into the world of the church to help her. "He died without complaint": they don't actually know this, they're just trying to make his death seem better for themselves. They're making the whole thing up because they've been told lies and they want to keep believing them. The clever wording makes it obvious to the audience what's happening, but the characters singing have no clue and still believe him to be a pure man despite the evidence. This further proves Hyde's point that the higher class people who display their kindness and charity towards the lower classes are just major hypocrites who are only in it for themselves, but put on such a good mask no one will ever know. And even though these higher class people would want to think they're far above him on the social scale, this behavior makes them no better than him, since he's doing a more extreme version of the same thing but for "good" and "unselfish" reasons. This is why I love this song to death. Sorry I know it's been a year since you posted this I just decided to revisit this song and saw your comment and got all excited about lyric analysis. You can ignore me if you want lol 😂 just had to get it out.

5:43 went to see this as a school show (a 16 year old boy playing Jekyll, west end standard at the least) and during this part Teddy (I think that’s his name) pushed the other two forward, screamed and ran. Then when Hyde says ‘Bad news from God, Teddy’ Hyde grabbed him under his arms and pulled him backwards whilst the guy screamed. It was really funny but the best show I’ve ever seen!

The music’s great but admittedly the plot drags like hell. Most of Act 1 is just Jekyll trying to do his experiments while everyone calls him crazy, and Hyde only comes in at the very end. Then after this banger opener to Act 2, nothing really happens until Lucy dies near the end, then there’s an awkward time jump to the wedding, then Jekyll dies. Serious pacing issues aside though the songs are incredible

This song is ridiculous. It doesn't make the show dark or edgy, it does the opposite - it turns it into camp, it's so overstated! This is like a parody of a musical horror story. And that cringeworthy imitation cockney - "That bishop copped it/ That bloke what done it hopped it" - I don't know how any actor can do that line with a straight face.
