The important theme of the film I feel is, the growth Muriel's confidence, personality and maturity. No wonder she retreats into a make believe world of such, what else does she have other than down trodden siblings, terrible parents, and ill fitting friends, who not too deep down, knows they have nearly zero respect for her, but she needs someone. Then this classmate out of knowhere, appears to her, but also properly treats her as a human being. Hence a catalyst for her to heal and grow. For me, a high level comedy, with none of this sacarine humour and emotion.

This scene masterfully depicted the bullies getting their just desserts. That segue from the mic drop takedown into the talent show, starring Rhonda and Muriel, was perfectly done with the musical score transition. It also exemplified, as the performance progressed, of Muriel's confidence growing, first reserved in the act and when her rivals start to implode, she really energizes, delivering a star performance and winning the competition.

@@retrocat1 I think they wanted her in so they could effectively dump her in the future when she couldn't live up to their standards. It gave them a kick people looking up to them and wanting to be in their gang and then rejecting them. In the end, they said they were friends with Rose Biggs remember who had been having an affair with Tanya's husband so yea they really were fickle and had bugger all loyalty to each other. Even Nicole had been kicked out of the group by the end but she'd probably have got back in again after some time. And they rallied around Muriel when she was getting the celebrity wedding even though before that they'd dumped her too and they'd taken to liking Rhonda even though she openly told them to f*** off in this scene.
