Neat looking fish. Are those shrimp edible or just for bait?
@RKJFishing
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Grant! They most certainly are edible, but given that they don't get very big, cleaning and shelling them can be quite a lot of work for not very much meat. We tend to go more for yabbies (crawfish) as they are bigger, tastier, and easier to work with.

Another great vid. Hoping my casting gets as accurate as yours and robbiefishing. Great explanation about knowing the depth. I've never fished for Murray Cod but will travel some and give it a go at some stage. I noticed when you were showing your bait with the marks on it that you didn't have the point or barb exposed. What is the logic behind this and does it make any difference to hooking up? Thanks in advance for any reply.
@RKJFishing
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Brett! Casting accuracy improves slowly with loads of practice haha. Just between you and me, I might have edited out a couple of bad casts LOL. Because the cheese is soft I can leave the point buried just inside it, and because Cod tend to strike aggressively the hook will have no issue pushing through the cheese and into the fish. You can expose it as well if you wanted to, but I think that the more of the hook is still inside the cheese, the better chance it has of staying on there when casting.

Do the Cod actually go for the cheese itself or the shrimp that are feeding on it ?
@RKJFishing

Hey Mickey that's a great question mate! Everybody has their own opinion on that, but in my opinion they like the cheese on it's own. Having shrimp around the cheese does help draw attention to the bait though! I've seen a cod smash cheese before it even hits the bottom of the river, way before the shrimp would have found it! Thanks Les! The current is stronger than usual because of an environmental flow release from Lake Eppalock recently. Even then I like to be able to put tension on my line when using a paternoster rig so I can ensure the bait stays up off the bottom, and those sinkers are probably smaller than they look on the video lol. Yeah I caught one the other week with a gut full of cheese and nice big fat deposits in around its gut, I know the bloke whos been trying to catch him and for about 15 years hes tried cheese, the cod just eats it off the hook untill it got a hook it its throat and snapped the line the poor fella, glad to put him out of its misery but he was wayyyyy fatter than the others, tasted like fish fat - fisheries dont care that ur feeding things outside of its natural food source. An old buddy did some science shit for woolworths and fresh fish, we studied it ourselves and came to a scientific conclusion, dont feed em cheese but that aint gonna stop ya, have a good fish mate

Awesome vid man! Those Cod look more like Bass than Cod. I have heard of the Murray Cod but honestly do not know much about them. The eye placement screams predatory fish. I do know they get quite a bit larger. Will they hit artificial lures? If so, what type of lures will they hit and what color? That might be our target species for the lure I am going to make you!
@RKJFishing
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. They are definitely a predatory fish, the largest freshwater predator we have on offer, growing up to 70 inches long. They love spinnerbaits or large hardbody diving lures, they will even hit a fly if it's big enough. I really appreciate the sentiment of a home-made lure mate but I don't want to have the added pressure of having to catch a fish on a certain lure again, last time stressed me out quite a bit. I hope you understand that I might not be able to make a feature video about it

great vid mate. just a question, what lures and sizes of lures do you use for yellas and do you cast in and around snags like cod?

For Yellas I like spinnerbaits or large inline spinners the best, but a size 3 stump jumper or something similar works well also. They do tend to hang around logs like Cod do, but they are also attracted to fast moving water. I usually pick them up in the slow water that sits right next to the main current

I've never fished in the Campaspe near Bendigo mate! I do want to explore up there in the future though, if I find a good place I'll let you know! The Campaspe is a very snaggy river in general though

Awesome video, quick first catch and towards the end the birds were making some serious noise haha. Look at all the shrimp haha.

Thanks mate! Yes our cockatoos aren't known for their serene noises that's for sure LOL they are one of the noisiest birds in the world I think! Next time I go to that spot I will have to try using the shrimp as bait, it seems the fish would be used to eating them if there's that many there.
