I like how, back in 2005, someone on Whomix made a remix of the Derbyshire theme but the middle 8 morphs into 'Do they know it's Christmas' just to spite Murray xD

Not that he brought it back in a Christmas special… In fairness, it did work well as victory anthem for ten.

It's interesting that for all the Gold themes excluding the 23/24 one, they're all missing the three notes at the end of the middle 8, which was present for nearly all of the classic themes 🤔

I have the utmost respect for Murray and everything he has produced for Doctor Who but I can't agree with his dislike of the middle 8. For me, it is usually the best part of the theme.

I kind of have this headcanon that when making the series 8 theme, Murray made the middle 8 hit hard just to mock Band Aid but then he inserted the screaming melody just to create a version that he would personally dislike

I genuinely think he only likes the “ooo-wee-ooo” part. Since 2010 he’s buried the baseline and we’ve only just got the middle 8 in the credits back for the first time since 2009

Well, not really, first time we got to hear the middle 8 in NewWho was in The Christmas Invasion's end credits, which is Series 1's Christmas Special or Series 2 Episode 0 ☝🤓

Always thought bandaid must have ripped off the Dr who middle 8. And I agree with Murray, it's far too sweet sounding for the show.

OK but - in this clip, thanks for making this - he's specifically complaining about Keff McCulloch's Middle 8. This interview was for the very first season of Doctor Who Confidential, where they're talking to him about making his first version of the Doctor Who theme. Weirdly he starts by comparing it to the "last" version of the TV theme, the 1987-1989 one - we've JUST had Keff Mcculloch release his demo tapes of this on Spotify, Apple Music, etc, and it's amazing … 33 years late! But amazing - for some reason Murray Gold didn't listen to the 1996 TV Movie theme, very bombastic, very American, and complain about THAT one. He listened to the "new theme" but picked a weird one … in fact if you asked most casual fans what the "new theme" was, they'd probably tell you the one that ended Tom Baker's reign and made a big impression for the next 5 years, the Peter Howell one. I'd love to know what Murray Gold's impression of THAT was. In the end, Murray Gold does two things … he says "you can't beat the original" (as if he didn't listen to ANY more versions) … he even gets as far as mixing a new version of the Delia Derbyshire arrangement, and it goes out on the leaked copy of 2005's "Rose", probably the nicest fullest version of the original theme ever made. And then … finally he's all like "it hasn't got enough oomph" or words to that effect, and he goes ahead and does a 1996 to it (my words), departing from the original and beefing it up with orchestral instruments. Which goes strictly against what he said at the start of the interview, along the lines of wanting to avoid a "wall of sound" style like Phil Spector did controversially with The Beatles, like the changes to "The Long and Winding Road" that Paul McCartney hated. Anyway go listen to the Keff McCulloch album released in Nov 2023 for the 60th anniversary ... it's great. And I'm totally biased because I was 12 years old when it was 'new' and they say: Your favourite Doctor Who episode is the one that comes out when you're 12. That album plays all the tracks of 'Time and the Rani' and totally bottles all the feels from 1987-1988. It was the new hotness in the late 80s and all the latest shows had that sound in it, with the new synth samples - including the "orchestral stab" that got totally overused. It was the vibe at the time though.

He didn't mix the leaked theme for Rose, Mark Ayres did. It was subsequently used on the 2016 Shada animation.

What a long winded way of saying nothing. So in short he liked the original but wanted give it a dramatic orchestral arrangement and also commented the later synth version/s were a bit too sweet or whatever.

My personal favourite episodes are probably in Series 3 and that came out when I was nine but still, it was a good age to be a viewer 😂
