Northern Rivers NSW is a very beautiful region but does experience an occasional major Tweed flood crisis. This year, 2022, we experienced a record-breaking historic flooding crisis caused by an intense storm cell and very heavy rain. The Tweed River peaked at 6.51 mAHD (metres above Australian Height Datum). For the first time ever the Murwillumbah flood levee wall overflows into the Murwillumbah CBD. The wall is substantial and was built to protect the heart of the town and some of the adjacent lower lying residential area. Fortunately, the rain downpours abated, and the overflow stopped. According to the Tweed Shire Council, this historic flooding reached the highest level in recorded history.
This year, Murwillumbah as well as nearby surrounding towns and villages in Northern NSW became isolated. Main roads become impassable due to the terrible flood wash-outs and blocking land slips. Services such as power, phone and internet failed. Commercial deliveries such as food and essential goods like spare parts were not able to get through. Technicians and other repair personnel were likewise unable to gain access due to massive road damage. I'm afraid that my written description here can't do justice to the circumstances, especially for those who have incurred heavy losses. All this adds up to a historic flooding crisis with SES volunteers and Police involved in rescue operations with the Westpac rescue helicopter picking up supplies from Marine Rescue NSW at Point Danger to deal with the Tweed floods. From images and videos now becoming available, it's clear that the road system will require extensive repair.
In low lying areas, for some weeks and even longer, there will now be large rubbish heaps piled on nature strips awaiting council pickup. It's happened time and time again in the past and will happen again in the future. It would be good if people could move somewhere else, but these properties will continue to be inhabited. However, the cost of relocating is prohibitive. A rising from the ashes always happens as resilient people start over again. There are kind-hearted folk here who will lend a hand.
