This duel never happened in the Eiji Yoshikawa novel this series was loosely based on. In the books, after the fall of the Yoshioka School of fencing, Toji was a bandit and a drunk married to Akemi's mother Oko. He was killed in a fight with Musashi and one of Musashi's students, Gonnesuke, when the group of bandits Toji was part of laid a trap for Musashi in the mountains near a Temple and tried to kill Musashi by outnumbering him in a group attack. In the books, Toji was once one of the 10 pillars of the Yoshioka school, but fell into depravity, as did Matahachi, due to Oko's vile manipulations. He died a coward, an outlaw and a drunk. Interesting in this TV series version, he dies in a noble one on one duel as a noble Samurai. In the book, he was scared shitless of Musashi and had fallen to pretty much the same level of depravity and self doubt as Matahachi did. He was a worthless lout in the books and never would've challenged Musashi to a one on one duel.

THIS variant of Musashi (2003) employs an ensemble of extremely handsome male heroes; each possesses an absolutely magnificent, superb, enchanting level of male beauty. Face, body, dramatic performance, movements, voices and articulation - everything is state of the art.

I think this is in the top 3 fight scenes in this series. Third time he fights Toji. He is a broken man, but his hand healed. He knows it is pointless to try, but he has to. Musashi has no choice but to kill. The dyed fabric add some symbolism to it all.

I think this is one of the best scenes and I like Toji the most of any characters. Such a tragic figure. Cannot let go, overcame his injury and then had to fight Musashi again knowing full well he was going to lose and die. But he just had to.

This version of Toji felt like more of a tragic villain than the other versions, a victim of circumstances thanks to Okoh's manipulations. Still a terrible person, but one that realized what he became thanks to Musashi and wanted to be put out of his misery in an honorable fight.

@panggiring

I think this Musashi character ( Shinnosuke Ichikawa ) close to the true Musashi that describe by Eiji Yoshikawa rather than Toshiro Mifune. Toshiro Mifune too handsome to be Musashi character.
@lass-inangeles7564
4 жыл бұрын
@@panggiring I disagree respectfully. This actor has a pretty boy face, smooth skin, looks very young, hardly any hair on face. Musashi was a savage man, crude in many ways. There is no difference between this man's boyish face and Toshiro's face in terms of being handsome and a pretty boy. However, Toshiro Mifune being the great actor he was, could transform himself into something savage and rough cut. Just look at the way he moves like a wild animal. He conveys Musashi's character perfectly. This one here, is a wooden block compared to Mifune. Stands there looking mysterious. No motion, cannot show in his actions what is going on in his head. Totally wooden. Looks like a city boy with a sword he does not know how to use in his hand.

there is no time limit/area limit to a fight, a samurai can just run circles around the heavily armored knight until the knight is too tired

so would a gun what's your point
@houayangthe3rd
6 жыл бұрын
Nope, the European knight would've been reduced to the same level of armor coverage as a samurai during the same time period. Something called the "gun" made wearing excessive armor obsolete during that time. With both fighter reduced to helmets, breast plates, gauntlets, greaves. One would think those 4 I mention would be all they wear as protection but in reality they all wore auxiliary armor especially the knight, which would favor the knight to 70/100 had they still wear auxiliary armor. So in context of armored fightimg it would be more like 55/100 in favor of the knight. But if you want to use reality it pretty much 50/50 since both warrior had access to fire arms thanks to the Portuguese. Also samurai had access to European grade armor also thanks to the Portuguese. So long story short you're a dumbass.

Barry Gil Pilar *face palm* European and Japanese sportsmanship are nearly identical. The differences come from the type of sword and the techniques that favor the swords typology.
