Iconic game with a great flow and presentation.
I also like the straightforward scoring system in Original, even though it's unbalanced and has 2 (or rather 3) inconsistent bomb tricks/glitches worth ~1M points*.
The bulk of the score (up to 51.5M) comes from not dying. The world record is 68M.
The rest of the points come from:
- Gems from bushes in stage 2.
- Remaining legs in the 2nd boss (6 x 180k)
- Destroyed wings in the 3rd boss (6 x 100k)
- Bomb tricks/glitches in mid-bosses (~1M)
- Gems from cancelled bullets
- Destruction (for both points and gems)
- Tick points
- A couple of speed kills
- Boss 1 milking (first phase)
- Stage 3 milking
(Without dying and getting all the extra points from the 2nd and 5th mid-bosses I could've got 65M, but I'm happy with this run for now... I hate that scorpion and its (no) bonus! XD)

Played on Switch, using super shot [trigger time: 3, interval: 2] and a custom OST for the first 2 stages: 1.5's for the first and Arrange's for the second. (^.^)

*killing a mid-boss with a well timed bomb grants extra points (especially in stages 2 and 5).
SMC found out how this midboss-multiplier trick works:
Mid-bosses are composed of several hitboxes and damage is applied to them in a specific order. The number depends on the mid-boss, so that makes the max "multiplier" different for each. It looks like they have 9, 2 and 5, making the scorpion the most lucrative.
In order to get the full multiplier, you have to kill it with a bomb covering all the hitboxes. But to get maximum points you also want the very first hitbox tested for damage to receive the killing blow (the later in the sequence the hitbox that receives the killing blow from the bomb is, the fewer points you get). It then still has to go through the collision detection for all the other hitboxes. You get the points again for every hitbox that is hit after the midboss is already dead.
The position of the midboss matters a lot too, especially in stage 2. If you bomb when the midboss is too high, some of the hitboxes will be missed.
In the end, it doesn't seem like something that'd be easy to manipulate. If the bomb does X damage (per hitbox) on the kill frame, the midboss shouldn't have more than X HP left at the start of that frame for maximum points. The thing is you also want to point blank with supershot for most of the bomb to drain enough HP, but shooting at the kill frame is to be avoided (if a single bullet from your shot hitting a specific hitbox is what kills it you'll be guaranteed the minimum points - this is what happens in this run with the scorpion), making any fine tuning pretty much impossible.
