A Night on Bald Mountain exists in at least five separate versions, three by Mussorgsky himself, one by Rimsky-Korsakov (the most popular and familiar of them all), and a later reworking of the Rimsky-Korsakov by Leopold Stokowski. This chat considers all of these, but especially Mussorgsky's 1867 original and Rimsky-Korsakov's 1886 standard edition, with musical examples and some of my own pointed commentary by way of illustration. The work is a masterpiece no matter how you take it, but direct comparison between versions offers a fascinating look at how composers use, and misuse, musical materials (that is, tunes) to create large scale forms.
