Tutorial about best way to quickly adjust/normalize levels between clips. New to FCP from DaVinci Resolve Studio, and that’s a super simple thing to do. I find some of the audio editing features in FCP like Range Selection to be great, yet others like audio leveling to be very weak. Thanks for all the great videos!

Hey Brad great video! Really enjoyed, and I think this topic isn't covered enough. In fact if you felt like making another video diving more into EQing your music... I felt the last segment of this video was especially intriguing but I didn't FULLY get it. I got the cutting out the vocal range part... but the next part about high pass and low pass filters... I couldn't even hear the difference! Maybe you could make a more obvious example to share with people and communicate the purpose of that. Plus making the music sound "under water" at the end was really cool... but would be great if you showed us how! It was like a teaser :D Soooo maybe a whole video on EQ-ing background music? :)

Thanks Jason! 😄 I could definitely do a more detailed video on EQ-ing. I'll add that to my list. I briefly mentioned the underwater effect because I have a dedicated video on that which you can see here if you like: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2INo1WaMmqWQoYY

Excellent tutorial. I already do this successfully, but in a more messy, open way, or I create a compound clip. Grouping the audio cuts in a secondary storyline looks like a much smarter, tidier workflow, so and I’ll be doing it that way from now on👍

Thanks for watching Bruce. Yeah and it also helps keep the music cuts you’ve made in the same place. Without being in a group, if you make changes to the clips on the primary storyline, you could affect the timing of the cutdown you’ve made.

I really like that you use cross-dissolve instead of crossfades. When I click on the end and hit command T the cross dissolve will only go to one track and not both tracks. Do you have any idea on what I am doing wrong?
@Brad_West
Жыл бұрын
It's possible that you don't have enough media on one of the ends. When you apply a cross dissolve and it only affects one track, it's likely because there aren't enough handles available on that specific clip. To fix this, make sure the adjacent clips on both tracks have sufficient extra frames beyond the cut point. If you need to extend the cross dissolve, try trimming the clips slightly from both ends to create more handles. Then, when you apply the cross dissolve, it should seamlessly transition between both tracks.

Hey Brad, great tips as always. Do you have a tutorial video on audio in Final Cut Pro. Some say to have your levels at -3 others at -1. Some say audio dialogue should be between -12 and -6. I’m so confused. What are your recommended levels for dialogue, effects and music?
@Brad_West
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊🙏🏼 Yeah you’re going to hear loads of varied opinions on that. I don’t have an audio tutorial on that but it’s a great idea. I’ll add it to my list. I generally record dialog around -12 to -6 and I compress and limit my dialog to around -6. I’ve always done that from my broadcast audio days and I find dialog at 0dB is too loud compared to other videos on KZitem. My music is anywhere from -30 to -6 depending if it’s just low-key, under my dialog or if it’s a music-driven section of the edit. Generally -30 to -24 if I have dialog over it. Effects are all over the place but I usually listen with headphones and then without to make sure that the sound effects are at the right levels. Another tip for getting the right levels for dialog and music is to play your edit back and turn your speakers right down until you can barely hear the dialog (but can still make out what is being said) and then if the music is too distracting at that low level, it’s too loud compared to the dialog. Hope that helps! 😊🤞🏼

Fantastic video Brad - thank you! I was particularly interested in the first segment regarding cutting down the audio track. I have tried something similar before in order to extend a track by copying it then using the end part of the copy and matching the beat at an appropriate connection point - but not to break it up in order to shorten it, as you've very clearly demonstrated. @Brad_West

Hey Edward. It depends on what transition you are using. It most cases, creating a compound clip should solve your problem. Select the clips that you want to add the transition to, hit Alt + G to create a compound clip and then double click to open the compound clip and add your transition in there. Let me know if that works. If not, let me know what transition you’re using 😊👍🏼

Thanks for the suggestion Zoliro. Maybe that’s something I should look into doing 😊 I appreciate the support 🙏🏼

Thank you Brad. It would be very useful for my channel soundgraph studio. I would be very happy if you can come visit and give some critics or recommendation.

Cool to see that you’re into metal as well 😊🤘🏼 I would personally love to see more behind the scenes in the studio videos from you. Keep up the good work 👊🏼
