Why should I learn about intervals? I always like to know the actual purpose for learning anything. Could you please explain why one should learn this? Thank you.

Hi Gabriela, Intervals are the fundamental “building blocks” of relative pitch, learning about intervals allows us to have more ways to think about music, and puts us in solid position to go further with ear training, learning to recognise chords and progressions by ear. Knowing about and being able to hear intervals helps us to think why this voicing sounds different from other voicing, which helps us to understand how to interpret a piece better.

Thank you so much ❤ We really don’t need prime and octave as terms, fuck them. Also what an excellent idea to explain 4th in the example fa-si - fuck perfect fourth, it’s so cool when students are confused with such difference between a fourth and a tritone! Confusion is the best feeling when studying anything! So fu… Thank you ❤🎉💩

There's no such thing as a interval without octave unison and prime.

The word interval probably shouldn't be associated with the word distance. It should really be just associated with the word 'span' ---- such as spans a number of notes (including the two notes that we're focusing on). Choose notes C to G. Assume the first note 'C' is the reference note. Assume the second note 'G' is the other note. Use the first note as the 'key' of a scale. In this case C major scale. So in the key of C-major, the 'span' of notes from C to G is five notes --- ie. C, D, E, F, G. This is what I would call a 'major fifth' --- but music terminology has it known to be a 'PERFECT fifth'. Whichever it is, the G --- being the 'fifth note' in the scale of C major, relative to the 'C' key --- "spans" FIVE notes. If the 'G' had instead been G-flat or F-sharp, then C to F-sharp would be 1 semi-tone less than before. So, in my books --- C to F-sharp would actually be a 'minor fifth', as we have to give this interval a name. But - the current music theory has assigned the name 'diminished fifth' for this interval. So C to F-sharp is just known as a 'diminished fifth' interval. Also ---- the interval from C to D would be a 'second' --- or rather --- a 'major second'. While C to C-sharp (being 1 semi-tone less the C to D) would be called a 'MINOR second'. And - also - if we can have such a thing as a 'minor second', then there's no reason why a 'diminished fifth' can't be called a 'minor fifth'.

Hi there! 1st or unison is when two notes are exactly the same note. Whereas 8ve, is when two notes are 8 steps apart (in letter names) e.g. C4 - C5 they are both having the same letter names but in different register. I hope I’ve solved your confusion
