It's a curse, a disease, a scourge of modern musical life: the inability of conductors to "let go," and let the orchestra cut loose at the climax of a work. What's their problem? Why can't they blow us away with the sheer excitement and sonic splendor that the music demands? It really pisses me off, and it should aggravate you too. Here are my thoughts.
