as an underground dubstep producer, small label collective owner, and EDM enjoyer myself: THANK YOU so much for making this video these promo channels and dubstep/edm labels really made waves on the scene, especially here in the underground i know dubstep and EDM in general may not be nearly as popular anymore, but it's just as alive as it felt years ago. even in the underground, we have promotional channels of our own and i have partnered and worked with some of them to help promote label releases as well. again, thank you for making this video
@SCTRS_

Nice to see you here Irie :) I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said, the promo channels & KZitem-focused labels like Monstercat & NCS really have inspired a lot of people to create their own promotion channels & labels. While the EDM scene on KZitem is nowhere near as big as it was, those channels have resulted in the creation of so many smaller, closely-knit communities, & there is so much life within them.

I actually used to be obsessed with Monstercat a few years ago before I got into full albums! I always used to imagine my own Geometry Dash levels whenever I listened to them. My favorite artist oddly enough was Tokyo Machine, not sure why since looking back, a lot of his drops are pretty weak. I also listened to artists such as RetroSpecter, Teminite, and Boom Kitty around this time. I think Geometry Dash was the main cause of my large enjoyment of EDM and Dubstep, despite barely playing it myself. It then continued in 2021 after playing Just Shapes and Beats, especially with artists like Shirobon, Djjaner, and especially Camellia, with some fanmade Undertale tracks being thrown in the mix too. Being exposed to songs like Blah Blah Blah, Bangarang, and whatever they were playing on the NickMusic channel in 2017/18 probably helped too. In 2022, my obsession with the genre decreased quite a bit, instead mainly focusing on Sonic VGMs and more Undertale fantracks, but I still often listened to those artists, specifically Camellia. However, that year would be my first taste of acclaimed music that wasn’t by Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, or something I heard from 2018, being two Led Zeppelin songs (Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir). I had listened to some Weird Al in 2021 but that was more of an exception. However, my usage of Spotify would drastically decrease until… Starting from around May of 2023 onwards, I essentially abandoned the dubstep genre and started listening to full albums, specifically some that were widely acclaimed. Strangely enough, the album that started it all was Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum by Tally Hall. I still have traces of that dubstep and EDM obsession, but it has since moved to artists like Machine Girl, Death Grips, and especially Aphex Twin, who has quickly grown to be one of my favorite artists of all time. I did very recently start watching GD videos again as well.

I got into Monstercat in middle school and they were basically what inspired me to make music. My biggest dream back then was to release with them. I didn't get to do that, but I was a finalist in their mix contest in 2022 which was still pretty cool. I still enjoy the new stuff occasionally but their best output was from 2013-2019 imo. I was also familiar with some of the other channels and they undoubtedly had some influence on me too. At the turn of the decade, my tastes started to expand a lot, especially more toward experimental bands, IDM, and whatever other weird or interesting music I could get my hands on. Anything from Ween to The Blasting Company to Mr Bungle to The Avalanches to Clark (who is still my favorite musical artist). Basically, I love artists whose style feels like it'd be practically impossible to replicate, electronic or not. All of this accumulated into me becoming a big music theory nerd because it's something I really should have learned a lot sooner, and the same with mastering even more recently. My debut album is almost finished and it'll probably be the first thing I've released that more than likely won't have any unwanted issues. I'll finally have something I can objectively be satisfied with after starting music a whole dang 10 years ago (though my early stuff should probably not even be considered music to be fair). The funny thing is, all the tracks on this album are so far off what I envisioned myself ever making. It's kind of a shame to see my initial inspirations essentially die out and lose relevance but I always kinda knew it was inevitable. I think people just naturally changing their tastes and moving on was a pretty big reason why electronic music lost a lot of its relevance, but I'm also excited for what's to come for electronic music as a whole in the future. Trends tend to be cyclical (just take a look at Taylor Swift's resurgence) so I think something like how electronic music grew in the 2010's could eventually make a return, but with some sort of major difference in how it's consumed and/or what it's attached with that makes it feel special. The specifics are anyone's guess. I could also just be completely wrong.

All of the dubstep and drum and bass craze when it was hot and discovering channels like UKF, it just takes me back to my 20s! The Crave You remix is one of the most memorable tunes of that era for me and I love it dearly until this day, plus all the different artists I discovered through the Mrsuicidesheep channel like Seven Lions, Mr. Fijiwi and Ramses B. Great video! Keep 'em coming!

There's a multitude of smaller music showcase channels (4am Breaks, Rabbithole Club) as well as individuals uploading vintage albums from the late 90s and early 2000s that I adore because I simply would've never found these artists to begin with, and it lets me go and support them myself after discovering them. These channels can rock sometimes

At least for the Atmospheric DnB and Jungle side, I really have to give thanks to Ambiance. Peshay studio set combined with that sims 4 dancing cat meme help popularize older genres until we got the eventual Y2K aesthetic era we have today. Also helps that he uploaded a crap ton of older mixes and tracks until we got more people making their own mixes and probably also help create so many new Gen Z jungle and dnb artists (including me)
