One thing I have noticed about ALL Band Maid songs is that all members get to shine equally. And consider Saiki's voice as another instrument. And Band Maiko was an April Fool's joke.

MISA's tone is GOD TIER. Her tone and sound are so distinctly her that the minute you hear it you know its MISA and with that you know its Band-Maid. Her song writing for her parts is also what sets her apart and that Kanami gives her the space and the freedom to express herself.

Kanami is a genius, she's as good a songwriter as anyone I've ever heard of and I now add Band Maid to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Free as my 5 favourite bands of all time. All Bands that in my eyes have never had a bad song and I can't say that about anyone else I've ever heard. I shall be forever grateful to Miku for realising her dream which created Band Maid at a time in my life (70) when I had long given up on finding any bands that could hold a candle to the fantastic music of my youth.

I heartily agree. I'm north of 75 now and I had completely lost hope for Western music, especially in the US, which has degenerated into a toxic stew. But about 4 years ago, someone posted on Facebook the music video Kishikaisei by Wagakki Band, and I was instantly enthralled. From there is was a quick trip to Baby Metal, SCANDAL, Show-Ya, X Japan, Aldious and then the piece'de'resistance, Band-Maid. And it's been all ahead flank speed since then. Asia, and primarily Japan, has become the center for keeping the faith with classic rock and roll and metal. And the best part is the number of really excellent female bands, which had disappeared from the musical landscape in the US. And discovering the excellence of vocalists that I had never heard before, especially Yuko Suzuhana of Wagakki Band, who I rank in the top 3 worldwide for female vocalists. Then you have the distinctive vocals of Su-Metal and Saiki Atsumi of Band-Maid, as well as the perfect vocal harmonies of SCANDAL. Absolutely gives hope for the future of good music. And I cannot wait for October 28th, 2022 in NYC to see Band-Maid on their US Tour. With all the covid issues I figured my only chance was to go to Japan to see my favorite groups, but now this year is a start. Can't wait.

Band-Maiko -- the only band better than Band-Maid. They are just as talented, but are more colorful (oh, and have extra instruments)! Gion-cho is my favorite Band-Maiko song, perhaps because it is an original. Or perhaps because it showcases Saiki's singing -- and Misa's howling!

You asked whether there were other Band-Maiko songs. There are but, other than secret Maiko lips, they don't have videos (live or studio). The full track-list of "Band-Maiko" is 1. "Secret Maiko Lips " 2. "Tora and Tora (虎and虎)" 3. "Yolosiosu" 4. "Ansan" 5. "Akasimahen" 6. "Screaming (すくりーみんぐ)" 7. "Gion-cho (祇園町)" Gion-cho is the only original, and for me, the one that makes best use of Japanese parts. I don't think there's any consensus among fans about which of the songs without MVs is best. Of the ones you don't know, Yolosiosu is the only one that is a reworking of a song you've reacted to before, but personally I prefer the original. Tora and Tora is the one which is the biggest improvement on the original (One and Only) in my opinion, but plenty of fans will disagree. Akasimahen is a reworking of Awkward, which is a remarkable song - a badass ballad. But none of these have videos on the official channel.

While I like the original One and Only a bit better, the Maiko version is truly great and loved the side by side that Wave Potter did on it. (I think it was that one...) One and Only in my view is another one of their top songs that has no video and never gets a mention. There are SO many of these, you could base an entire YT channel on Band-Maid songs without a video. (Hmmmm.....) And now I'm thinking it may have been Ryan Mear, not Wave. Oh well, love both of their stuff.

Quick Suggestion in case you haven't heard it and it slipped by you. The drummer Matt McGuire put out a cover in his own style of the song "Don't Let Me Down" by the Chainsmokers in 2016 (Illenium Remix). 👘 This is Miku's love letter to Kyoto, the old capital. She's from Kumamoto, but she really loves that part of Japan. It's the traditional heart of this kind of culture. "Gion-cho" means "Gion-town", the Geiko (regional Geisha equivalent) area in Kyoto. A Maiko is a Geiko in training. Kanami has said that she learned a lot about studio mixing while working with the sound engineer, and adding the virtual traditional instruments for the seven songs on the BAND-MAIKO CD. I think we've been getting the benefit of that ever since.

I think "Gion-Cho" is gorgeous. I think it's one of Saiki's best vocal performances and probably a top five B-M song overall for me. The instrument you like at 2:50 is a sample of a koto. As for the kimono, I don't know how many layers the maids wore here, but an actual maiko would wear a lot of pieces in their outfit. Their belts - the _obi_ - are much longer than other types of obi and are heavy and help a maiko with her posture. In your other BAND-MAIKO reaction I provided a link to a performance by an actual maiko, so I won't do it again here.

I tend to prefer their B-MAID stuff in comparison. Their music is already so densely composed that the Japanese instruments take away from the dynamics present in the original (e.g. secret My/MAIKO lips). That said, they're great when judged by their own merits, and as a standalone song, GIONCHO is proof of that. I think the only song of MAIKO's that I love as much as the original is Akasimahen, which is Awkward's counterpart. The rearrangement of that song is so drastic that it really stands on its own.

I much prefer these arrangements to their usual style. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the fusion of traditional Japanese (or other cultures) instruments and music with modern "western" rock just works. I'm lukewarm on their normal material, enjoying certain songs more than others. But when they dig deep like this and add those sounds you normally don't hear in this type of music, it just adds layers and complexity that I find very enjoyable and refreshing. I'm pretty sure you're familiar with Puscifer. Recently, I saw a video of Brass Against doing a cover of Puscifer's "Grand Canyon" and they got a traditional Indian folk singer to sing the part normally sung by Maynard and it's... majestic. I always heard that tonality in the original track and I could tell Maynard had those sounds in mind when he wrote it. But hearing it sung in that style by someone who is so proficient and trained in that style and raised in that culture just kinda brings it full-circle. The same applies here. See also The Hu, Bloodywood, Heilung, and Cemican. Matter of fact, you'd probably REALLY enjoy Cemican. They're a Mexican metal band that combines Pantera-style thrash with Aztec percussion and wind instruments. It's brutal and wild and amazing. Anyhow, I've lost the thread here. Really enjoyed this track! I'd love to hear them do more like this 😂 Here's links to the two songs I mentioned above if you're curious: Cemican: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o3yEl6V-jYOpe4o Puscifer/Brass Against: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yIxmqpeGoGqWfqA
