The funny thing is that the majority of Beatles songs were the opposite of 3-4 chord songs. They were quite advanced in chord and melodic structures (but they were completely absorbable for the masses). That's not something you'd say about most of these opponents' songs. But the Beatles were not technically advanced musicians. Like the session and jazz musicians Quincey would hang around. When Jimmy Page was looking to resurrect the moribund "Yardbirds" he was going to call the band "The NOEW Yardbirds"; but Keith Moon told him that name would go over like a lead balloon, so he thought up "Led Zeppelin" (look up the "Hindenburg" balloon disaster). The Producer can decide which instruments play which parts and structure the verses and chorus. The Producer can decide who sings which harmonies. The Producer decides a lot more than the listener is aware. In 1962, at one of their first recording sessions with George Martin, he asked the Beatles " Is there anything you don't like?" John Lennon said, from the beginning, that he wanted to be rich and famous. And I've yet to learn of ANY musician, rock or otherwise, who wanted to be poor and unknown.

I was born in the early 70s so I'm pretty aware of the Beetles and all the other musicians. I don't like or dislike any of them. But I feel like some of the musicians are a little hypocritical considering they do/did the exact same thing that they say they dislike about the Beetles. And Michael Style, c'mon now he thinks the Beetles are elevator music. What about R. E. M? I'd 10times rather be stuck in an elevator forced to listen to the Walrus instead of everybody hurts. That should be blasted over the speakers at Guantanamo Bay. Just my opinion.

And he wasn't playing jazz, was he? Put a jazz drummer in with The Beatles, and that wouldn't have worked well either. A great 'group' drummer isn't always flashy. They make it their job to showcase and enhance the music, not dominate it. Ringo understands that simple sensitivity to what is needed is the mark of a great drummer. It's also an interesting aside to note that Ringo's son, Zak, is now the drummer for The Who! You know, The Who ...with Pete Townsend. :)

The Beatles were good at what they did. If what they did, wasn’t appealing then it’s quite different from saying they’re were lousy. I get the feeling that some of the comments were made by contrarians trying to set themselves apart from the masses.

A lot of this is taking quotes out of context. Especially the section on the Who. When Townshend said that the Beatles sounded "lousy," he meant it as a compliment (seriously!) because he was explaining to an interviewer why musicians needed to watch out for overpolishing productions. By "lousy," he simply meant that the Beatles embraced a certain cacophonous quality which gave their music texture.

My Bass player was asked who the "Band's" influences were musically when we had an hour of play time (of our album) and interview on 103 out of Lapeer. My Bass player mentioned the Beatles in the list that "WE" were influenced by and I immediately threatened to Knock Him Out, live on the Air... He and the D.J. started to laugh, like I was joking.. I made it VERY clear that I wasn't joking and that the Beatles were an overrated bunch of musically inept buffoons with an over developed sense of self worth and ability, that they just managed to appear on the music scene at the right time EARLY in Rock History and that is how they managed to become famous world wide.. I also said the "WE" weren't as big as the Beatles and may never be but at least I can look at myself in the Mirror and not see a talentless Fraud. People began calling in and asking where we were going to be playing next and that they LOVED what I said.. Vindication is sweet...

back in 70s the beatles lost favor with many teens. it was almost out of fashion, or unhip to say you liked them. if asked, do you like the beatles or the stones? the answer would almost invariably be the stones. but they could rarely defend their position. if asked to name songs they liked they would name about 10 beatles' songs but only two or three stones songs. people are fickle. they too eagerly and blindly follow trends and jump on band wagons without thinking and without reason. me? i've been a beatle afficianado practically my whole life. one thing the beatles did was introduce me to all kinds of different music. you can like the beatles and other bands and other genres too. personally, the beatles brought so much enjoyment and pleasure into my life. other bands did too but never at the level the beatles did. one thing the beatles did was bring quality to "pop" music. they were essentially hard core rockers who wrote and played GOOD "commercial" music that appealed to a mass, international and ageless fan base. also, they helped make non-commercial music "commercial." it became known as "the counter culture." and the beatles were a big part of the counter culture. the beatles began as as "club" band in hamburg and the cavern. raunchy, raw and exciting. then they became "teen idols" slick, commercial and teenie-bopper oriented. but they continued to grow and mature with their fans. they experimented and innovated. the beatles were truly a unique and special music and cultural phenomenon.

Most of the criticism from these artists is that they seem to think the Beatles songs are too simple and not musically complex. However complexity does not equate with greatness. The Beatles genius is taking what seem to be simple melodies and arranging them into joyful, emotional, or unforgettable tunes. Its as if they were cooks and could take simple ingredients and blend them into an incredibly delicious meal while the clasically trained chef uses expensive ingredients and cooks an unpalatable dish

In this video about The Beatles everyone is entitled to their opinion. I was in 5Th grade when they hit the stage on The Ed Sullivan Show & being that age at that time was very imperishable & they did it for me & those who watched them play that night at that time. I think that music was looking for a new direction & The Beatles provided that direction. Shortly there after, Britain provided all the top bands & 2 duels & 2 female singers, this then led the way to more talented American bands that were being discovered at that time.

The Beatles was the most hyper-merchandised and exploited group of all time (my opinion), but Beatlemania was real. I was a devoted Beatles fan from the beginning, at age 16 in 1964. My favorite music was from their early years. It was music for teenagers, and I was one, and it was fresh and exciting. But Revolver was the first album that began to disappoint me, although I stayed loyal throughout the decade. I did not mourn when they broke up in 1970, and I did not follow their careers, when they went their separate ways. We all grow and change over time, and music is always evolving. The Beatles was not the Last Word in music, as it turned out. There was an abundance of other good music during the 60's that was eclipsed by The Beatles, unfortunately. But The Beatles remains my all time favorite group, for old time, teenage's sake.

Stupid when you think about it. Elvis invited the Beatles to his house and Paul said they had a wonderful time while they were there and were excited to meet and hang out with him. Paul went on to say it kind of hurt when they found out Elvis tried to get them deported. Elvis was worried about drugs? Didn't stop him from being a pill head. Even if their music was not that great, lot of those guys that didn't like him got to be famous because the Beatles were out front. When he heard, "The Beatles were elevator music." a music critic replied, "If it wasn't for that elevator music, you would be taking the stairs now."

I am a Beatles fan, as much as any child is a fan of Mother Goose. But that said, a lot of these musicians make a good point. However, Len Barry's criticisms are unfair: the Beatles worked VERY hard, as hard as anyone can work for hundreds of millions of dollars. Also, their live act may have been sub-par, but they were really the first to have to deal with a modern-style concert tour, with the screaming and the endless traveling. They did this with terrible sound equipment and stage management that could barely keep up.
@jannertfol

How they managed to survive this insanity is still something that inspires awe in me. I've just read the biographies of John and Paul, written by Philip Norman, and they are real eye-openers. The Beatles became so discouraged at the crap they had to go through, and the overwhelming personal effects of their fame, that it's a wonder they carried on at all. It's testament to their love of music that they did. I saw The Beatles in concert in Toronto in 1965. They were only able to be onstage for 25 minutes, before the crowd could no longer be controlled and they had to escape. Only an occasional twang got through the screams that actually left me feeling deaf afterwards. We just had to guess at what songs they were playing. I can't imagine what that sort of thing, repeated over and over throughout their tour, must have been like for them.

I fed up with all this talk of 'the best' and 'the greatest' and 'the most loved/hated'. This is art. Not a horse or dog-track race. There are no winners and losers and seconds and also-rans. Art isn't a competition to see who comes out on top. It's not a fast sprint to the finish line against rivalled runners. Some people worship Bob Dylan; others think he sounds like a fog horn winding down. Taste is personal and there is no accounting for it. I like what I like and you do you. That's the way it works. Any artist can learn just as much from the stuff he or she dislikes as from the works that move and inspire them. If we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place indeed.
