Mussoorie is a hill station and a municipal board, in Dehradun city in the Dehradun district of the Indian state Uttarakhand. It is about 35 kilometres (22 mi) from the state capital of Dehradun and 290 km (180 mi) north of the national capital of New Delhi. The hill station is in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range. The adjoining town of Landour, which includes a military cantonment, is considered part of "greater Mussoorie", as are the townships Barlowganj and Jharipani.[3]
The Tapkeshwar Temple is alleged to be 6,000 years old.[3] It has a natural shivalinga in the cave, which became a place of reverence for the local people.
It is also believed that this was used as a residence by Dronacharya, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Hindu epic Mahabharata; the cave is called Drona Cave after him.[2][4] Dronacharya's wife Kalyani was unable to breastfeed their newborn son Ashwatthama.[3] As Dronacharya was unable to afford a cow or cow's milk, Ashwatthama prayed to Shiva, who then fed him milk dripping from the shivalinga in the cave.
Robber's Cave (locally known as Guchhu pani), located near Sahasradhara (thousand fold spring), is a river cave formation in Himalaya, located approximately 8 km from the centre of Dehradun City in Uttarakhand state of India. The cave is about 600 metres long, and divided into two main parts. The cave has a highest fall of about 10 metres. In the central part there is a fort wall structure which is now broken.[1] It consists of an extremely narrow gorge formed in a conglomerate limestone area on Doon Valley's Dehra plateau.[2]
