It's hilarious when a design engineer says something like "I like it cuz the knobs don't really tell you what they do." This is fast becoming my favorite Channel on KZitem. When a buddy of mine introduced me to Soundgarden all I could say was, "at last here are the successors to Black Sabbath." Born in the early 60s I didn't have a relationship to grunge and sort of resented the whole Seattle thing. My son's obsession with Kurt Cobain didn't really help. But this album and Soundgarden's Garden of sound opened my mind.

Here in Canada, as well as a teen in the 90's, Grunge was it. A great Canadian band that got its start in the early 90's is the band Sloan. And their first big breakout album Smeared was released by DGC. This album and their sound on this album is what got me started on the search for that sound. They say this album was soaked with the Boss HM2 heavy metal pedal, but not sure if there is any truth to the myth.

That's on my board also as my distortion part. Mines been modded with a bias knob and I'm running at 18v. So it's the older 3 knob version.

@@robertross9074 If you want low volume, get a lower wattage that breaks up faster at a lower volume. Want more low end? use a 212 or 412. At home, all you need it 2watts. On stage you want more headroom. I don't actually plug my guitar in, unless I'm at rehearsals or at a show.

@@RealGingerTea I never got used to distorted or overdriven sounds at lower volumes. I've played for over 30 years. I no longer use 100 watt or even 50 watt amps, but if it's less than 25 watt into a 1x12, I don't like how it sounds. Just a preference. Like I said, the Tube Screamer is a nice exception. @@robertross9074 Have you tried an attenuator or a volume pedal/pot in the FX loop?
@robertross9074
3 жыл бұрын
@@RealGingerTea Yes, of course. I have attenuators on all of my amps over 30 watts. I use volume pedals to create swells. For instance, many love the sound of an overdriven Marshall 100 head into a 4 x12 or stack. The headroom is very hard to duplicate. Now amp companies have gone to lower wattage heads, single speakers (even some recommending 8"!) and yet to my ears, these amps have no headroom at all. They are like two-dimensional paintings. Flat. Could this be altered by a pedal? I like to think so, yet pedal technology today is not so much different then it was 30 years ago. Give me technology that replicates the headroom and natural gain of an overdriven, high powered tube amp. It has yet to be created, in my opinion.

The biggest thing I get out of listening to this video is that your amp has a sick sound. You can definitely hear its character even with those distortion pedals. It's that feel that it's kicking your jaw. I unfortunately hate black hole sun. Not because it's bad, it's good. It's just that it's so easy that we would play it on band class repeatedly like forever. The music that changed my idea of distortion? Has to have been Smashing Pumpkins. I'd say Quiet from Siamese Dreams. It was so super heavy to me, all the noises and the drummer banging the drums with all he got. Then later Stone and their album Emotional Playground. My world changed forever because if an album of '91. There hasn't been a better guitar sound with distortion. There have been different and amazing distorted sounds, but that album is like someone pouring honey in my ears, it makes me feel warm and a bit crazy at the same time. When I hear it, I have to stop and just listen and get zoned out enjoying what it does to my brain.

The White Stripes album Icky Thump is what truly introduced me to a whole new world of distortion possibilities. I had never heard fuzz before then, but after that intro track I was never the same. As far as Favorite Distortion pedals go, im gonna cheat and pick the two I used together. A boss Waza Craft Super Overdrive with the gain at 2 and the drive at 3 to push whatever amp im using, and a turbo distortion completely dimed to slam the super overdrive for maximum gain.

My three favorite overdrive/distortion pedals are the Bogner Ecstasy Red, DSM & Humboldt Silver Linings, and Diezel Herbert. The Bogner can get a bit fuzzy but it does best with a tight EVH-style tone (I compared it to the MXR EVH pedal and found it to get very close while being far more versatile). The Silver Linings gets a really good almost-fuzz overdrive from it, to me very reminiscent of the Marshall Silver Jubilee (my dream amp which I'm hoping to own one day). I actually think the Silver Linings gets closer to the Jubilee than the Alexander Jubilee pedal I used to own. the Diezel Herbert is a great roaring, thick metal sound and easily the best pedal I've found for metal, though with its gain turned lower it can also do some heavy blues.

Great episode as usual, and great playing! I have the Strymon Sunset, and love it. Hyper versatile. I also have a REVV G3 (high gain shenanigans) and the Spooky Tooth fuzz (70's away!). All excellent. But now I want more.......

The first album I listened to that changed the way I looked at distortion pedals was Periphery 2. Like meshuggah, they found ways of making 8-string guitars coherent and made them sound good. The song is Ji, and I think it holds up very well to the plethora of other tracks on that record because of the fact that the low strings are clear as day, making for a wider range of notes and tones. And for the other songs, while being very distorted, were very tight and almost machine-like, which sounds awesome imo

I have a question about the distortion that I think is important today for musicians, with the development of digital amps. I think you, Josh, are one of the few people who can provide a clear and precise answer. I hope that you will get into this topic in a video, to benefit the greatest number. It all started a few years ago, when I tried to use overdrive and distortion pedals on digital amps. The result was very disappointing, nothing to do with what it gives with a tube amp or even a transistor amp, or even between analog pedals (pedal stacking). I don't know much about it, but I have supposed that the process of clipping is "physical" : it's by physically pushing the components (tubes or transistors) that the wave is deformed (clipping). I assumed that, when this process of clipping is reconstructed digitally (thanks to lines of programming contained in a digital hardware), it's no longer possible to act physically on it as in analog systems. There is inevitably a rigidity of the digital system that can't adapt itself to new analog informations. It's as if we blow on a real dandelion flower : the seeds fly away. But if we blow on the picture of a dandelion flower, nothing happens ! The digital tone is like a digitized picture of a tone, and can't be pushed physically. It can only be as programmed. It also makes me think of the difference between going to the theater (analog), where the actors are responsive to the reactions of the audience and give a different performance each time, and watch a DVD movie (digital), which will be exactly the same, whatever the attitude of the viewers. I guess the most advanced digital amps have extra programming lines, calculating that if the guitarist raises the signal, it changes the tone according to this or that preprogrammed principle. It "multiplies" the "digital pictures", but it will never have the entirely original, unique, and constantly creative characteristics of an analog amp that is boosted each time differently. I think there's an digital limit here, specifically for overdrives and distortions. I don't mean delays or chorus, etc., which don't present such fundamental problems. These are my deductions, but I am not a specialist. It seems to me interesting today to answer this question : is there any sense to buy a booster, an overdrive or a distortion pedal if you play on a digital amp ?

Hell yeah, Soundgarden, I started listening to Black Sabbath a lot about that same period, Sabbath is the best to play along with starting out or if you've been playing for 40 years! Great reviews as always, thank you! Acapulco Gold!
