As a child of the 60's i grew up with henrix, clapton' beatles & stones. I was self taught on guitar. At 48 started taking lessons from & excellent teacher which went on for 4 years. A fatal illness of my spouse stopped me from playing. I started again at 67. I am drawn to melodic jazz now. Love both channels!!! I am stuggling mightely but trying to stick with you two. In way over my head. Thankd

Guitarversum Sandra Sherman I've thought about my answer and it depends... 😎. My first impression; there are several challenging tunes here, Donna Lee, Body and Soul, Spain but in fairness you didn't reference "beginner" in the title. I was intrigued by the discussion and inclusion of some modern material particularly fusion, we have a long way to go there. Two that surprised me (in a good way), Mr PC and Tenor Madness. A couple I thought might be on the list, they come up all the time; Blue Bossa, ATTYA, Stella. Please do not take this as a critique, I learn something every time I tune in and this is no exception, some great new material to work up. Thank You!

@@dkwvt13 Yes, Stella, ATTYA and Blue Bossa definitiv should be on the list. The thing is Richie and I agreed on 1-2 standards for each one per category, in order to keep the list and the video as short as possible.

@GuitarversumSandraSherman

Ja, das is tmir auch schon aufgefallen. Letztens hat mich wer diesbezüglich angeschrieben, weil ich immer parallel minor sage, obwohl es ja relative minor heissen müsste. Hab darüber früher nie nachgedacht.

Nice list, but I find it misleading to count "Blues for Alice" as "major blues", since it has not much to do with the basic blues changes, hence - as far as I know - the respective form is known as "Parker Blues"; that said, I'd replace "Blues for Alice" by "Now's the Time" or "Billie's Bounce" and mention the Parker Blues in the "Bebop" section. Furthermore, "Footprints" was written by Wayne Shorter, not Horace Silver. Anyway, Mr. Silver wrote a bunch of really great tunes like Sister Sadie, Song for My Father which could have made it into your list as well.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. Maybe it's called differnetly in Europe? Blues For Alice was always labeled a Major Blues where I live. It is indeed a Blues form, but with a lot of substitutions ;-)
@sshawnuff
5 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I live in germany and never heard of "Major Blues" in the sense of a "terminus technicus" like "Minor Blues", but often "Parker Blues" for that kind of 12 bar form. Well, I am not a professional musician, but to my ears it is, due to the substitutions you mention - which have strong implications on the choice of notes to play over it - quite far away from a "Blues". Parker Blues and Confirmation for instance are much more related to each other.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman
5 жыл бұрын
@@sshawnuff Let's agree that it's a cool tune, no matter what category it falls into 😊. It was introduced to me at the Vienna conservatory as a Major Blues and I've never heard the term Parker Blues until today. But really, I think that's not so important. I love that tune.
@sshawnuff
5 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman :-) It is not important in terms of the tune, but in terms of categories; the categorization idea is great, and because it is a good idea I dared to make that hint. No question it is a great tune. Other technical terms I know for the form are "Bird Blues" or "Bird Changes".
