I'm one of the testers and I can tell you every build was changed according to all the feedback Terarin got from more than 20 testers. Every update was a big improvement and added tons of nice stuff balancing the gameplay, adding more fun parts and fixing some bugs here and there. I hope everyone get the chance to play this game, is fast and fun. I like the visuals, are very simple but in a good way, I think these are pretty inspired by ZANAC, in that game the visuals aren't super complex but conveys the sense of speed, minimalistic but not bad. Stage 3 music is my fav ;)
@ShmupJunkie

Stage 3 music is awesome! But I loved them all. His composer really needs to do more! This week I will bet we will have even more suggestions for him to make improvements as we play the caravan. Two that came to my mind, was the final boss phase could use some tweaking, but mainly it would be killer if there was a way to maintain a chain through an entire stage section (in between each boss or interlude, etc), at least on Expert mode. That provides a lot of replay for skilled players for score beyond beating the game. Whether possible or not I was going to mention it.

Excellent review my friend. This is a surprise hit for many, but I hope this game finally puts Terarin's name where it deserves to be. He's a great dev that has worked with a lot of passion. He listens to feedback from all the testers and players around. He does all of this while still having a 9-5 and not being a native English speaker. Terarin is the type of doujin/indie dev that works with passion for what he does. He deserves the praise. I encourage everyone to at least try the demo/caravan mode. On the other hand, I hope Caravan modes become a thing again, especially so as demos for main games... they worked 30 years ago for a reason, there's no reason they wouldn't work for the exact same purpose 3 decades later with digital distribution and online communities.

Thanks buddy! It's funny how you and I had the same idea for this video right from the start. Soon as you mentioned it to me and the caravan, I was already thinking the same thing haha. However, I didn't know he was willing to get me a code for the full game, so the timing came together perfect, and it wouldn't likely have happened without your help (as often is the case). The music really is something else isn't it! Caravans are the new thing and I feel like I have been part of trying to bring them back. The new Cotton will have them too. I've never actually played a horizontal caravan mode in a game before, as caravans are often very screen position oriented. But if you ever join us one day for a caravan event, you'll get some in-depth perspective on what makes them so unique versus just a score attack. They have a lot of scoring nuance to discover. Okay, so Barrage Fantasia came out yesterday and Rangok Skies came out 10 days ago, and both are really good bullet hell games, so let me just compare those games to this one as someone who generally prefers to play action-adventure games and RPGs. I keep going back to this game again and again, and I actually just beat it, while I can't even get past the second mid-boss of either Rangok Skies or Barrage Fantasia and I'm already losing interest in both. I think it's because this game's gameplay is so quick and simple and its design is so clean and focused. Clearing out wave upon wave of enemies coming in at a million miles an hour and collecting all the crystals they drop is addicting as hell, and racking up huge combos with little trouble is really rewarding. Bosses are really epic, especially on higher difficulties, and the stages are pretty sweet themselves, I really like the battleship even if it's the biggest run killer for me, really creative stuff. Most bullet hell games take a long time to get the hang of, it's hard to take in everything, the hitboxes require trial and error to figure out, and they're much slower too. That's why I stay away from any official Touhou content; I'm fine with really good bullet hell games but official Touhou games... aren't that (Luna Nights and a few other bullet hell action-adventure games are fine by me though). It's also why I'm really sad there don't seem to be any truly classic style bishoujo 'em ups. It's like eating an overcooked steak as opposed to a bag of chips. Sometimes simple and accessible can be preferable to meaty but tough.

I’m really glad you loved this one and you put it really well. The gameplay is perfect in its simplicity and it’s just fun. Terarin knows good shmup design and the fundamentals being a good player himself. And he made it to his preferences which are the older pc engine vertical shooters. It’s also great for beginners on normal and even hard. And expert is really fun if you ever get to that point. We did a week long caravan contest on my discord for it back when it came out and everyone had a blast. This is one game I may be revisiting soon in a video when I do the best shmups for beginners.

@@ShmupJunkie For what it's worth, this is the first space shooter I've ever beaten even on the easiest difficulty without save states, and I did it on one credit. I went into the run on which I ended up beating it thinking, "oh, I'm just going to put a bit more time in so Steam asks if I want to review the game." I lost 5 lives on just stage 3, but none on its boss, none on the boss rush and only one on the final boss. Until I read your reply to my comment, I was thinking of moving on to Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth starting Saturday when it leaves Early Access, but now I might just try this game again on hard mode. Actually, I said much the same as my original comment in reply to a review of Kamiko shortly after Werewolf Princess Kaguya came out comparing the former favorably to the latter, and both comments were based on a comment comparing Soul Blazer favorably to Illusion of Gaia. And this game was the first to make me notice a real hole in the indie game market that aligned remotely with my interests - where are all the really classic space shooters as opposed to bullet hell, especially ones full of anime girls? Until now, I haven't really been enthusiastic about making games, thinking "oh, there are plenty of other games kind of like this idea already," but that just changed. If you get around to making the video you describe, feel free to share anything and everything in this comment and my original one.

@@ShmupJunkie I have one of those Switch Lite's but I don't use it much. I just can't justify the high price of games on consoles these days compared to Steam/PC, especially since I picked up a dedicated gaming laptop (Lenovo Legion 5) a couple months back. The vast majority of games I've ever picked up on Steam/PC are in the $5-25 range (often for exactly the same game) compared to the $40-$80 range of most console games. I figure I'd rather pay more money up-front for the hardware (PC) and have less expensive games, than the other way around. I know a lot of people complain about Raging Blaster's "simple graphics", but I really like the look and to be honest, i'm a little mixed on the "improved" look of the Switch version. :-) I think I'll try that "Eschatos" game you recommended now which I picked up awhile back when it was on sale but haven't started yet!
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
@@TransCanadaPhil Oh heck yeah. Eschatos is now a top 10 game for me I’m in love with it. Just the music alone is as epic as it gets, but overall the game is just so much fun and never stops. I do highly recommend starting on the easy mode it’s meant that way and finish it like that first. You’ll gain extra credits and other bonuses including starting on later stages the more you play. And normal will be a legit challenge. There is a mode called Endless which is good to start too. Basically the first loop is easy mode. Later the Advanced mode is the same difficulty levels but adds more nuance and weapon upgrades while playing vs the fixed normal mode weaponry. But no matter how you play it the presentation and music is stellar. You’ll get a few cheap deaths during some of the wilder camera panning sequences but once you know and learn to avoid them it’s a non factor. Let me know how you get on with that one as I’m a big fan.

You may be very surprised how well you do playing this one. The normal mode is very much geared to most anyone being able to pick it up. Most of my footage was expert mode as it's more exciting to watch in a video. I would bet you'd smoke it on Normal pretty quick. Even HARD isn't too bad. Expert feels about like one of the Aleste games on normal, if that gives you an idea. It scales well and starts easy enough to learn and makes for a good starter/learner shooter.

I feel the same way about Crimson Clover it's too much with the stars, Cave got to where the entire screen was pink bullet's. It's not a good design choice with Shooter's. It doesn't need to be mistaken for bullet hell, when it drowns out the whole screen you can't see your ship or enemies any destruction. That's a lack of enemy design, did you notice with Toaplan games they always seem to have had that perfect balance. The most important thing they did was level and enemy design making you think technical about dodging against patterns. Raiden games had fantastic patterns you had to learn with bullet hell games when everything is covered the screen and your ship can just go through makes no since.

It's pretty much the same as the M2 widgets on the shot triggers games. Those side panels are not play area, they are just for scoring and game info. It looks like the play area, as the actual background and enemies are there, but you can't actually move your ship past the borders. BUT you can actually shoot other ships from outside the borders which is kind of cool. It works well in practice and never obscures anything you need to see. I didn't mention it, but in the options menu those borders and how they look can be changed too.

If the developer had any brains whatsoever, he would put this game onto the Nintendo Switch - you know, the console that retro-gaming fans use. Steam is for teenagers who only play first-person shooters.
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
That’s a bit harsh. Have you ever developed a game on no budget by yourself and considered how difficult it is to release on a big console like Nintendo or Sony? Many small devs would love to but can not afford it. However in this case you’d be mistaken, as the developer Terarin actually DOES release his games on Switch eshop. He just released another one of his older releases called missile dancer. So he smartly released this on Steam first, and will make feedback and improvements to the game, including the graphics likely, and if it does well and when he is ready will release on Switch too. Steam is a good test bed to first get lots of feedback and make improvements. So if this game looks cool to you, in time expect to see this in the switch eshop. Look how long it took to upgrade crimson clover and finally release it on switch. It’s hard for small devs to do, but it was worth the wait!

@ShmupJunkie

This was still one of my fav shooters that came out all of last year, and I especially liked the music in it. It's not easy for a single indie dev to make crazy graphics unless they're an artist, and I don't disagree the graphics are simple and may turn off potential buyers. If the genre grows and the games bring in more money, devs will be able to hire artists and others to contribute and improve the overall presentation of the games. Until then, not all but most indie games will be more basic in presentation, as the return on investment to make and sell a shmup doesn't justify the cost. But that's what I and others like my channel are hoping for. To keep increasing the popularity and viability of the genre so even more medium sized devs like M2 will start putting out top tier games for us.
