Loved your reaction ❤ Music is a language we all understand and connect to. You are correct, Stan is a New Zealand Māori. His Tamoko (Tattoos) are real and all of these places in the video are where his tribal connections are, except one place his wife comes from. “I AM” is his response to Ava DuVernay’s film 'Origin'. It is about the reclamation, reconciliation and reconnection to our identity, our language and the origins of who we are and where we come from. By knowing who we are, we are then able to know where we are going. This is how we unlock our greatest power. I AM is taking back the power and giving it back to the people.

And Origin is the story of the author of the book Caste which tracks caste systems globally to present day and shows it's repercussions as systemic racism in society. Yes, layers upon layers in the origin of this song. As a pacific islander, his representation has been huge to us as a community. I recently saw Stan in Hawaii in concert and it was epic and joyful and amazing. ....(I'm also part Swedish, so sending Viking love as well!)

You're so correct with your interpretation of the (waiata) song and correct with the Stan's native language, Maori. Great 😃👍 reaction thank you for your intuitive sense and feel for the Maori culture. At times I feel our waiata when sung the way Stan sings is very similar sounding to the Indian American song.

Please consider reacting to some Haka. It will touch your soul and bless your warrior spirit. It is both spine-tingling and beautiful. The Māori people traditionally performed Haka before battle. There are many different Haka which are performed at special times, i.e. weddings, funerals, sporting events {The All Blacks made Haka famous throughout the world of rugby). I am Australian with Māori heritage and observing the Haka is both an honour and awe inspiring. I know you're a reaction channel, but I would like to mention that talking during or interrupting a Haka is considered disrespectful. They generally do not go for too long and there is no copyright that I'm aware of. I promise it will be one of your new favourite things. Kia ora.🙂

@@umarae27 what does 'Quigley down under' have to do with the plight of the New Zealand Maori? Aboriginal Australians and New Zealand Maori have their own unique and horrific histories and 'Quigley down under' is not it for Maori. Just curious as to why you would use that reference?

7:04 mad respect to you for taking time to dive into the message because it's deriving from a culture so close to my own which is the moari culture, new Zealand. It's so much more than vocals and style because the culture is embedded with a fierce familial love that goes beyond the grave. There's more to life and it doesn't here and they're always with with you in your walk of life fiercely protecting you. And I love that you're picking up on other parts of the message on how it's connecting with the holocaust and how that message of love ties in to a very real event to remind us we're more than this❤❤

We must remember we are all humans and this affects many families regardless of what Country and Race we just happen to be born into. Stan Walker won Australia's got talent show. Shortly after his win, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The same gene that has taken a lot of his family. He had his stomach removed and began a new journey. He had to learn to sing differently, which he has successfully. He is Maori, speaks the language fluently. He has learned so much about his culture and the dynamics behind it. He wanted to sing using the Maori language, so when others tried to persuade him differently, he himself became an independent artist so he could perform everything the way he wanted. It was either going to make or break him, so as it turned out, the decision was spot on. Ava Duvernay looked him up, but had to go through someone who knew exactly how to find him. Ava was so inspired by his vocals, she absolutely had to have Stan see the movie "Origins" and then have him write the theme song. The theme song is " i Am."
