In 1978, I was member #68 of 140 in Jake Burton Carpenter's mimeographed news letter. The photo to the left is me jumping a Snurfer through a briar bush just off the Appalachian Trail in TN. I discovered your vids 2 weeks ago, just as I took up the board again for the first time in 24 years -my 10yo daughter wanted to trade skiing for riding. After about 5 hours I was about as able as I'd ever been (minus the daring and strength of youth). By 8 hours of riding and using your tips, I began to forget which foot was dominant. At 57 yo, I am stoked on boarding.

this may be your best video yet!!! i don't think anyone has really produced anything like this. every sport has certain drills you start off almost as a beginner and you continue throughout your career. these are the drills that keep you from falling into bad habits. i, myself fell into bad habits over the years because of injuries and less frequent trips to the mountain. until this video, i've been trying to take bits and pieces of your other videos and come up with my own warmup/drills to use on that first run or two. it's important to have drills so you concentrate on the fundamentals as to not pickup the bad habits and then when you're doing other stuff on the mountain, you now don't have to think about those things, as they now become natural through that initial awareness and muscle memory. if you can really make a good series on these drills, it would be awesome. one for beginner/intermediate, one for freeriding and one for freestyle. btw.... thanks for these vids, you saved my snowboarding career.

i picked up board with edge tech... it works. got that in my quiver and i bring it out for ice and it'll hold an edge. don't like it enough as my daily rider, but it's worth it for the added safety in ice. it really gives you the confidence to still enjoy yourself out there. just don't get too over confident though because it's not going to make the snow any softer.

Doooood, again! Your progression tips and drills have helped me pass a major barrier again: I caught a heel edge at decent speed doing a switch bs revert at the end of last season. I got a bad concussion and a fractured pelvis. A fear barrier appeared that I couldn't seem to break even when i tried. Switch riding just became super scary to even try. I went to the snowdome today and was doing the toes to toes exercise and by the end of the session i was riding switch confidently! and even managed to throw a switch bs revert without dying! I only have 10 days on snow from nothing too. You are the sickest guy on youtube man! Being nerdy is the biggest flex 👌🤙🤙🤙thank you so much!!

Just being generally fit as possible. Ride as much as you can, and be as physically active in your life outside of snowboarding as you can. That said, you can't just go from 0 to 100, you need to start small, give your body a chance to recover and get out again. Over time you'll notice you can handle more and more, and recover faster. Building endurance can continue for years, just focus on getting out and riding as much as possible while listening to your body, giving it time to recover.

Hi!!! So first off thank you for such amazing content. I’m really grateful to be able to come here and learn some stuff. So I have all of the bad habits you say not to have lol. I open my shoulders way too much and lean on my back leg as I am riding. I also use y back leg to steer which now after watching all of your videos it makes sense why I am having a hard time carving and transitioning from heel edge to toe edge. So now that I know what not to do and how to fix it.. it seems my body doesn’t like want to do the new things. It’s difficult take the weight off my back leg.. and it’s difficult to close up my shoulders and stack them over my board.. like I have to really force it.. do you think with time it’ll get easier to unlearn these bad habits??? I really wanna get better!!!! Ty

For the knee steering, I'm kind of confused. You say that you shouldn't "back steer". To me, this means counter rotate. When you are doing the drill, i see that you are doing front knee steering, but you're also using a significant amount of counter rotation. Can you clarify what you're aiming for in this drill? Are you just saying that one should aim to make sure the mini turns are initiated by the front foot, but counter rotation to help increase the magnitude is ok?

Hey dude, great content as usual! I'm just wondering what board type you're riding in this video as you can clearly lay down and carve hard but you seem to be able to press and butter really easily too.. is this a stiff camber board and you're just super smooth on it or is it a softer more playful board? I'm looking to get into more freestyle this season and not sure weather to get a shorter all mountain camber board or something a bit softer, I love fast carves so don't want too much compromise on that... Thanks, Mark

Sit with your feet down hill. Stand get comfy standing and sitting. First run you just slide sideways break all the way down the hill. Break left break right and back and forth the point is to determine your dominant riding stance. Then one you are confident you are regular or goofy, start a run and swing the back leg around and start toe carving. Keep it sliding on your heel side while on hard ice. Nothing better than a bowl at the top of the mountain and then ripping up the black diamonds.

@@tommiebennett drills 2 and 3 i hold solely responsible for destroying moguls for the first time in my life. still don't like moguls, but they have less consequences than trees, which i do love and now this has opened up greater terrain for me in the trees. i like to pop in and out of them and do glades, but hit a plateau with that. now i can do steeper and tighter. really wish you were around 20 years ago.
