Hi Mike, great channel, love the videos. I’m an RWD ID4 owner from MN. The heating system in the ID4 is amazing. Instant heat that keeps pouring out in my 30 min daily commute that has me driving without a jacket. I miss my AWD SUV and have been thinking of moving to the MachE AWD! Keep the videos coming.

Hi Jeff, you bet! I enjoy it very much, although I wish I could have taken delivery of it when our road conditions are better. It has been a slight learning curve navigating using an EV in a winter climate, but I'm up for the challenge.

Is there a difference between using the departure setting in the Ford Pass and manually starting it 15 minutes before you leave?
@upnorthmike6085
2 жыл бұрын
Great question Greg; no there is not. My issue is my schedule is constantly changing, so I like to just use the manual option. If I worked M-F 9-5, the departure setting is by far the way to go!

I spoke to the engineers at Ford about this. Turns out there is a difference. ONLY by setting a scheduled departure will the car precondition the battery pack. And this can take a while. It seems to vary based on temperature. I have a meter connected to my service panel that graphs my power usage ... so I can see when the car started pulling power. Sometimes it'll start around 45 mins before scheduled departure. Sometimes over an hour early (e.g. 1h 10mins, etc.). But the primary purpose is to precondition the battery -- which improves efficiency and results in more range.

@@TheVirtualTim I learned this through trials and testing as well, see some of the most recent videos. I can see the curve on the Charge Point app, although in the video I posted today, something isn't working as it should with the departure setting. Ideally, the departure setting should in fact be used whenever possible, especially during extreme cold.

Do you have any issues finding charging stations for your car?
@upnorthmike6085
2 жыл бұрын
I do not. However, there was one time I was going to travel about 2 hours to a small town of less than 3,000 people and there were no charging stations within 50 miles. I took my other vehicle instead that time. Otherwise, with just a little pre-planning, I have had no issues finding either free or fee based chargers

Great video, Mike. I live in Maple Grove and expect to get my Mach E in January. On a cold day (close to zero F) how many miles per KW/hr are you getting?
@upnorthmike6085
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ron - I hope to cover this in a future video. For now, it's a bit of a non-answer...it depends. There are so many variables such as cabin temp, previous driving history, regenerative braking use etc. I'm going to reset my calculators and try to keep driving to as "average" as possible for at least two weeks, then report on some attainable miles per kw/h.

I wouldn't say worry, rather planning ahead when possible to extend range. I'll do a heater update when we have some -15F weather later this week

@@upnorthmike6085 well, I for sure worry and it’s pretty sucky that we spend 60k on a vehicle that we can’t blast the heat if we want to. Now I get this is only a concern for road trips and I think for now the plan is still just to use the wife’s ICE vehicle for those.

@@97JoMiller I have a 2013 Volt that I bought brand new. Great car. Older technology. I agree with you whole heartily. The climate control (heat in the cabin) is the most negative. A/C works great. When it comes to heat, EV's have a ways to go, especially if you live in a very cold climate. The delta for cold air is a lot smaller than it is for heat. The newer model Y uses a heat pump. I don't know if it has supplemental PTC heat for extreme cold.

I've got a FE Mach E and thought I was going nuts back in the early winter thinking my heater was blowing cooler air at times, even after preconditioning (Manually starting from FordPass, not by departure time). I currently precondition the car while not plugged in (working on getting an adapter for my plug so it can reach my car in the driveway). At low speeds the car heats just fine, but once I get on the highway I'm freezing and the car struggles to defrost any ice build-up on the windshield that may occur. It was 1F this morning, roughly -8F with the wind chill and my car didn't get warm until I parked at work, which is around a 25 minute drive. So far I'm extremely unhappy with all of the issues with my Mach-E (I expected some, just not as many as I've dealt with), and winter driving really makes me consider trading it in... Then I remember how much I like it during the rest of the non-winter months.

Hello Mike, in the Dutch Manual, it states the E-heat can be swtiched off. The car will "generate" alternative warmth. But that sounds nuts. To your knowledge, does the car extract warmth from any other source ??
@upnorthmike6085
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can pull heat from the batteries as they warm up due to regular driving. This is only in very moderate weather. I can't say exactly what temp, but maybe around 15C/55F or so, where you don't need a lot of supplemental heat. Think of it more as a shoulder season option.

Hi Jerome, what issues specifically? I use a networked Charge Point charger often and have had no issues charging with that system. At home, I have a Flo system and no issues with that. I have also used the included Ford charger on a 40 amp circuit and had no issues there either. I have yet to charge using a DC fast charger; however.
