I've lived in Bali 8 years and now spend 75% of my time in Java, Sumatra and Indonesia. I travel by myself and feel safer there than I do in Bali to be honest. I've just circumnavigated Sumatra and spent 5 days in Banda Aceh without any issues. Sorry to say but Bali is not the real Indonesia any longer and there is so much more to see than Bintangs, schnitzels and cheap copies.

Very true - I try to avoid the really touristy areas. My first trip was on my honey moon in 1988. I soon tired of it 17 years ago when I discovered Thailand. I have been back to Bali twice this year as it really is a cheap and easy holiday where I don't feel guilty not doing anything. When I first came to Bali they were selling pirated cassette tapes. The suit shops have now been replaced by tattoo stores.

Yogya is where I lived from 93-2000. I still have a family home in Yogya. I love it and I personally prefer it to Bali. It's a much bigger city now. There are many western style hotels with western toilets. There are also lots of western style restaurants too. I always had bubur ayam (chicken, rice porridge) for breakfast when there wasn't a western choice. I think you'll have to search around further for all of your options. Whilst I'm probably opening myself up to those who deliberately misunderstand, I do wonder though, why live in Indonesia if you insist on keeping a western lifestyle? Wouldn't Thailand or the Philippines be a better option? It's a genuine question not a criticism. Thanks

Would prefer Java over Bali, Bali is full of bogan tourists. Just spent 3 weeks in Java, Surabaya, kediri and Blitar traffic was fine and good hotels.

Yes I agree. Murray is really exaggerating about Java. I ride my bike to Java around 3 times a year. The food is great the traffic is not bad. The roads are good. I can do 100kmp no problems. Toilets are never a problem. The hotels i stay in have Bintang. April 2024. 3 of us rode to Yogyakarta great bike ride. ❤❤❤

In most bigger cities in Java there is at least one shop to buy beers and drinks. There are also some bars in Yogja. Have fun, the people are wonderfull over there.

Thanks to the Prez, the traffic situation is very, very much better. I was living near Jakarta back in the old days when 2-4 hour traffic jams were the norm. Yer spoiled and you don't even know it. 😁

We were there in January very different. We could only buy bintang at our hotel... we went to temples and it was very nice. We stayed in town. But definetly must prefer Bali.

@@MurrayWilkinson1 I now know what you meant about finding the booth to pay the arrival tax. I did eventually find it (the staff were lovely) but it took some effort. So many people just walked right past it. I actually went up to the counter, as did another Australian family and said that I would like to pay - they almost seemed surprised.
