So if a 20" bare naked barrel inherantly has less flash than a 16" with an actual flash hider, why run the 20" bare? You should do a video comparing the muzzle flashes between a 20" ar with a muzzle brake to a 16" with a flash hider. I'd imagine a muzzle break wouldnt add to the muzzle flash but give it the recoil of an airsoft gun

Given that some flash hiders are very good at their job, I'm not sure that a 20" barrel has less than a 16 with one of these better flash hiders. But I do think the added velocity of a 20" barrel coupled with narrowing flash difference in flash signature. There is a channel somewhere that has done some detailed comparisons of different flash hiders...they compared the flash hiders to a bare 16" barrel, but didn't compare to a 20". I have another video on the RDB and its sensitivity to having muzzle devices mounted on it's pencil barrel. Accuracy remains good, but the point of impact difference between 55gr, 62gr, and 75gr is almost 32MOA when fitted with a flash hider...virtually no difference in point of impact between all of the bullet weights with bare muzzle. I have a forthcoming RDB video where I have installed a RDB Hunter model thread protector and will compare point of impact across the different weights. www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/keltec-rdb

This is nice information. I just purchased my first 3 port muzzle device. If I install this on a 20in long barrel will I get a increased flash or no flash like in your test ? Thank you

20" still has a flash, just that if I debating between a 16" barrel with flash suppressor vs 20" bare I think the 20's flash signature isn't that much worse than the 16, so I choose the added velocity of 20. A ported muzzle device, a compensator, or brake will probably have a bit more flash. The is a guy who tested a bunch of flash hiders using a high speed camera. Worth checking out for a more scientific analysis.

If the flash hider was causing barrel droop to shift your POI wouldn't all calibers be effected the same way? Why would the 77gr droop more than the 62gr? its still 3oz on the end of the barrel either way...

No idea the mechanism behind the result. I suspect barrel whip harmonics is involved in some way. I ended up putting the RDB Hunter thread protector on the RDB.

Do you think your zero issue was the result of the barrel extension being loose? Also fantastic information. It makes me revaluate going with a shorter barrel if all you are going to do is put an extra 1-2" right back on it with a muzzle device.

The zero disparity by bullet weight with a muzzle device persisted after the barrel extension nut "repair". I ended up putting on a KelTec Hunter Thread Protector...featured in my latest RDB video "My KelTec RDB Updated and Refined for 2023" www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/keltec-rdb

As for muzzle devices, a suppressor that reduces sound and flash might be worth the added length.

To me, part of the value of a bullpup is getting the entire package as compact as possible. I'd be hesitant to go from a 16" barrel to a 20" barrel. On the other hand, if an 18" barrel with a very small muzzle device would give less flash than a 16" barrel with a traditional flash hider, the 18" barrel would be appealing to me. The idea of a linear compensator appeals to me. A small one probably doesn't do much if anything to change the sound level of a .223/5.56. However, if a very tiny linear compensator did anything to reduce the sound coming at my ears, that would be my first choice.

Choice of ammo has a lot to do with how much muzzle flash you get as well

Great video. Gave me new information and things to think about. Seems to me that your ideas should lead to a market for a flash hider that is not fixed to the barrel but to the handguard. With a free-floating barrel, the flash hider attached to the handguard would help hide the flash but wouldn't affect the barrel or the accuracy of the rifle.

I don't have an SBR or AR pistol, but it's safe to say the flash will be significantly bigger...I'd guess 30% larger.

Try a flash hider but a lighter one and see how the barrel will do.

Try a strike industries warhog $25 new. I think it will do well on the RDB.
