We were the first family to own a Japanese car on our street, a new 82 maxima sedan, my dad had enough of the poor quality of u.s. cars, he convinced my uncle who was a US steel supervisor to buy a maxima station wagon for my aunt Josie. And she loved it. 🤓

Living in suburbs of Pittsburgh, in the early eighties driving a Japanese car, you would get the stink eye, from some people, my next door neighbors only bought ford and Buick , and 0ldsmobile .

It would have been a revelation to those used to Malaise Era US product...Nissans were some of the jolliest cars on the road in their heyday - extra good.

gregorycomunale1550, your neighbors were smart people. Virtue signaling is a pitiful hobby, especially where cars are concerned.

This was one of the best cars we ever owned. Then came the U-11. Ugh. Used to deliver wedding cakes in it. So ahead of its time. Z engine.

Loved my First car, this Nissan Maxima 1984 sedan. Had her for 34 years, and enjoyed every drive. I also loved thevtalking female voice, she worked all those years as did the digital dash. The top seating seating surfaces were leather and never ripped, they were veautiful saddle yan leather and the exterior of the car was Mocha like vriwn metallic. The squared-off design of the car was timeless and beautiful. I only have purchased new import cars, and my Maxima was my First True Love for a car, my other true love was my dog.

It was nice of Nissan to give the car a mute button. Chrysler did not put a mute button on their talking cars. People quickly learned what an automotive fuse was, and how to remove the one for the robot.

My grandma had one of the "Datsun Nissan" Maxima sedans. I forget the year. It had the little taking voice if you left your lights on or if your door was left ajar.

Gotta love those Orientals - took 'em awhile to learn exterior design though; in the early years it was like you took an American car and well, squinted /s

I suppose the space under the hood was neat and clean due to EFI. EFI enabled car companies to eliminate a bunch of vacuum and heat operated smog devices. EFI often meant less smog, reducing the need for as many added devices. Also, the devices they did have could have been computer operated to reduce the number of vacuum and coolant hoses. The space may have also been cleaner due to having an inline engine and RWD. The next Maxima had a V6 and FWD, and made the underhood space far too cramped. My mom had one, it frequently broke down, and every repair cost a fortune because of it.

Yes however the first Maximas came out around 1980 or 81 in the US, perhaps slightly before the Chrysler K Cars. The similar styling may have been in Japan (Bluebird).

Yes back in the day that's what people called Asians typically from Japan China Korea, etc, at least in Hawaii. Caucasians were called Haoles in the Aloha State. Some may have offended. However we all got along, living in tiny islands in the middle of the Pacific. Guess how you view it depends on you and your reference point experience and perhaps when. Hopefully we have come a long way for the better.
