(Am at work, will come back later to elaborate) I love how his character is written. He’s a consummate professional, both to the other characters and to you. It takes a lot to rattle him. Even when he gets upset (like with the Racist Lorry Driver), he is calm and, above all, professional. It’s like his profession is a protective barrier between him and the world, just like his thick glasses. So when you get little glimpses of his history or personality, like his car hobby or how he hates pinball and loves speedfreaks radio, it’s really charming. Like he’s becoming friends with Harry, so he lets his personality out a little. I have no explanation for how he puts up with most of the stuff you can make Harry do. My theory is that it’s a mix of relying on that barrier of professionalism to try and use the makeshift policing system that is the RCM to make their crappy world a tiny bit better because no one else will (or at least not any worse than it already is) and a whole lot of “I can fix him” energy.

Since everyone is gonna throw out their favorites I need to bring up Christine from Fallout New Vegas Dead Money. She is very interconnected to the game and other expansions if you look for it but mostly what stuck with me was how you interact with her. She was made mute and brain damaged, so she cannot speak or write, or use any other type of language based communication. The only way you can communicate with her is through a series of skill checks based on her miming things and you understanding them. And despite that difficulty you can form a pretty deep relationship with her, and the reason why she was made mute and such was an amazing revelation. It stood out to me so much. She was such a unique companion that I have to bring her up.

The only major issue with the game is the story… oof it’s like half missing. You can only imply so much depth before you realize it’s a whole lot of cut content. Other than Ashe and Basch feeling like the actual main characters, Balthier really is just so much more interesting than most of the cast. Ashe also needs to learn how to run properly. Sad to see Hero Irene didn't make the cut. Yes, the translation is janky and the story is hard to follow sometimes, but I really liked her for several reasons. Not least of which was how reluctant she is to join up with the MC; it's rare for a game to focus so much on characters' values keeping them apart instead of just being an excuse to shove them together as quickly as possible. Can't really complain that the list starts with Morte, though.

NWN2: You mention Khelgar. Very fair! Did you know? NWN2 also has the *worst* companion! Now, you'd *think* I'm talking about Bishop. But no! I'm not! It's Qara. She's just... the worst. (Also Anders from DA2, for related, but distinct reasons - note that it's DA2, not DA:Origins.) And, yes, I know Bishop is literally worse, but come on. They don't even try to make him sympathetic. They know. Qara, on the other hand? She's literally just an unpleasant unrepentant jerk who epitomizes everything wrong with the Chaotic Neutral alignment! And they try to get you to side with her! It's dumb and makes no sense! (Neither does the extremity of Sand's antagonism for her, but, you know, the fact that he hates her is reasonable; it's just not reasonable to the extent they take it.) And that's not to talk smack about CN: ALSO chaotic neutral in that same game is Neeshka, who is easily the most frustrating "non-romanceable" party member in that game! Dang it! I just want to give her romance hugs! (Also, Khelgar, Sand, and Ammon should have been romanceable for the girls, and Zhjaeve for the guys. I wanted Shandra to be, even though we all know why she's not. With Qara it's understandable why she's not a romance option. (Also Grobnar and Construct have their own thing going on, so it makes sense they're out of the running, too.)) So anyway, this has been my TEDTalk about why Qara sucks (I didn't actually go into much detail, but, look, this isn't my video, so I'm trying to avoid lots of words, but oh, no, I'm faaaaiiiling arg), and why Neeshka should have been a romance option.

It occurred to me after the fact that I didn't even mention Mask of the Betrayer! Not that it was super-relevant, but since I'm complaining about lack of romance options in NWN2, MotB has Kaelyn and it's sad you can't do anything with that! Everyone else in that game was near-perfect, though. (Okay, Gann should turn it down a notch, but OTHERWISE everything was near-perfect! heart-Safiya~!)

Sebille got the best questline in divinity imo
@tominatorxx
Жыл бұрын
Sebille, Lohse and Fane have the best ones imo. Love all those 3 storylines for different reasons. Sebille on a personal story level, Fane's because it's really embedded with the main story and adds a ton of lore, and Lohse's because it's one of those storylines that works perfectly well as an extra quest line that runs parallel with the main story. Some storylines imo don't always need to connect back to a ton of lore or the main quest line to be good. Lohse's is a perfect example of that. Red Prince is very solid. But it's not as engaging as Lohse's while also not feeling too connected to the main quest line. However, it is a quest line that offers some very fun encounters and dialogues. Helped by the downright brilliant voice acting for the character. The best of the bunch imo and that's saying a lot if you know the quality of the others. Ifan is kind of "meh", he offers quite a few unique dialogue options, but his big connections to the world itself only happen through a few NPC's. Because of that, he feels even less connected to the world and main story than the Red Prince. Beast has easily the worst one of the bunch. He has a personal story that's just connected to a side plot in Arx involving death fog. But that quest doesn't really add to the main story all that much, nor does it really get up to speed until the 4th act, from what I remember. The side quest is pretty solid, but as a plot connected to a personal story, it becomes prominent way too late in the game, which results in it not having enough connection and impact with Beast's story.
@whitejesus6225
Жыл бұрын
@@tominatorxx completely agree with you on this, really wish they would have given beast a more personalized story rather than it just feeling like he gets shoehorned in as the black sheep of the royal dwarf family so he has a special interest in it, at the end of the day it doesnt feel like he is important to his own quest line and the wrap up for it is kinda lame. Lohse is my favorite to play as my character because i think its cool to get to interact with adramalik and as her own self contained thing its nice and its actually important to that whole side questline with him. I say my favorite is Sebille mostly just cause of the parallels between mother and master, and how theres not some black and white their both super evil answer. They each have there reasons for doing what they did and Sebille is at the center of that.

But the way he is written and voiced is so intricate, so deliberate. He has a very subtle, but very believable character development arc over the course of two games. He's often very conflicted about life, and he turns to you for answers. Otherwise it feels like he's a fairly closed in person, very melancholic. And when you need him - he's always there for you, ready to provide a much needed perspective on what is happening. He just feels like a very reliable, trustworthy friend.

If I were to make a list, it might look a bit like... 1. Morte 2. Kim Kitsuragi 3. Kaelyn the Dove 4. Hiravias 5. Annah-of-the-Shadows 6. Viconia 7. Kreia 8. Sagani 9. Khelgar 10. Nok-Nok There's a few I'm surely missing, but this feels about right at the moment.

@@Rhygenix I love how catlike he could be at times. Had that vibe of the "adorable serial killer with a Napoleonic complex" about him. All of the goblin personification and interactions throughout Kingmaker were easily my favorite thing about the game.

Atton, from KOTOR 2. Viconia from BG 1 & 2. Wrex and Mordin from Mass Effect. Jackie and Panam from Cyberpunk 2077.

Jolee Bindo from the first KotOR is one that still stands out. Not only was his voice acting well done, he does a bit of Kreia-ing (yeah, I turned her into a verb) before Kreia was a thing. Even his side quest resolves without light or dark side points.

I don't remember this character in the game at all, very strange! I must have totally missed him somehow!

He’s like a light side version of kreia, as he’s still against the sith but hates the stupid rules of the Jedi.

Jolee is great, but he didn't do any Kreia-ing really. He just says prequel's massage against jedi's blind tradition and apathy and he still follows classic SW morality.

Your description of Blackwall made me think of Mordin Solus. The Mass Effect Trilogy is probably my favorite game/series of all time. And Mordin really feels like he's also just trying to right the wrongs of his past as well. You find him in the clinic just trying to save people, through both medical knowledge and with the business end of a gun when the gangs come calling. Playing through, you find out about his involvement with creating the genophage, and realize that everything he does is about his guilt about what he did to the krogan. Finally culminating with his sacrifice to reverse the genophage. I'm convinced that you can make any true Mass Effect fan cry with the phrase "Had to be me. Someone else might've gotten it wrong." It still makes me tear up just thinking about it.

@@Sairishere Ashe was, but it was changed because of concerns over guys not wanting to play as a girl. lol But Balthier would've been a fine replacement, so would've Basch... Vaan was not... But the idiot making decisions at Square at the time thought the annoying tween would be more marketable as a protagonist. And thus we got the worst and most useless protag FF has ever seen. FF12 is fantastic despite that, but damn does it suck it had to be this way.

Garrus and Wrex from Mass Effect were my best buds. Morrigan is the most interesting part of Dragon Age, and Varric is a must-take character in any scenario. I have a real soft spot in me for Lemon in Shining Force II. Really cool twist. Doesn't really count, but shout out to Irenicus from BG2 for taking Imoen's whiny ass away for a chunk of the game.

One of my favorite compainon is none other than "The Nameless One" from Planescape : Torment. Yeah, yeah, I know, the Nameless One is the playable character but it is also multiple people that talks to you through memories, diaries and the likes. But the way the Nameless One's past lives teach you things and speaks to you, accompanying you through your whole journey, is pretty similar to how a companion works.

For me Eder from PoE and Deadfire takes the cake as nr1 favorite companion ever. Then it's a tough choice between Minsc and Viconia from BG1/2 On third place... I'm not a huge fan of ME series but Garrus and fem-shep has amazing, brotherly chemistry. Overall, I'm MUCH more into a good showing of friendship in RPGs than romance.

I like Alistair. To me he is a great role model, a far more complex character than he ever gets credit for and one of a very select group of companions who you can actually see as a friend in the real world (I mean, we all love Garrus, and Shepard can deal with him - but for reality, he's rather violent, unpredictable and rough). Alistair genuinely cares about other people yet he doesn't care what others think of him. Morrigan and her incessant bullying never really gets to him and he doesn't mind being called stupid or a bastard, even if only half of that is actually true. He is still a protector but without the toxicity of performative masculinity. He isn't afraid of being emotionally vulnerable and honest about his fears, but when it's you who is in a tough position, he will shield you and try to make you feel better. In a world without a Blight, you could totally see him in a job that's useful to society, because being a warrior is not his calling because he wants to kill things, but the role that is needed the most in his home nation. When the most needed thing is instead a king, he becomes that. Also, he's just hilarious. It's ironic, because they clearly tried for Varric to fill the same role (the permanent canon companion who has charisma, wit and an integral connection to the story), but with Varric there was just too much "look how great he is". Part of that can be excused with DA2's framing, but he always seemed to polished to me, never quite vulnerable or with reasonable flaws.
