I had a 1993 Goldwing and I started having running problems, backfiring, sluggish throttle response etc.. I thought it could be some crap in the float bowl plugging up a jet occasionally. Taking the carbs out and thoroughly cleaning the float bowls and finding nothing I said to myself why not check the slides and sure enough one of the diaphragms was torn. First time I've ever run across that in ANY bike much less a Wing. Replace the part and it ran sweet as could be. Another tip; when you have the carbs out there is a vacuum line sitting between the carb boots that gets hard from age and cracks leading to a leak. It's a very common problem, do that while you're in there.
@jalensi1978

+1 for the vacuum line under the carbs. Under the heat mat, has a 90* bend where it connects to the intake. Bad juju.

With a pretty basic set of tools, a you tube video, a little common sense and some time is really all you need to work on most items on any bike. I've been (very slowly) working on an 1977 xs650. I've had it down to case halves, trans out etc. You can find pdf versions of factory manuals on a ton of these old bikes. I'm in the mock up stage right now, and it's going really slowly. But eventually it will be complete and rideable.

When a bike has 3 more cylinders than necessary, it will run without them. It's called redundancy and Goldwing was ahead of its time on this... Congrats on figuring it out! Also, new seat is good for at least 11.4 HP and a clean windshield is another 5 HP. Probably makes up for the missing 3 cylinders.

Shadetree getting the carb out is an adventure in itself. For the windscreen anyone's rubbing compound then follow up with polishing then finishing compound will do the trick. Have recovered some that most would place in the circular recycling center file.

I taught the kids some basic carpentry skills and we built a little shed. Framed out the door and windows..... they learned how to use basic tools and eventually moved on to air guns, etc. ............... 24 years later, several kids have found amazing success in the industry. If I were closer, it would be nice to teach the kids carpentry skills and build tiny houses for the program.

If the windshield is made from the same plastic as headlights of nowadays. Try some toothpaste. Try a test spot, maybe where you tried the mother's at. Get some cheep small tube of toothpaste. Put on some neoprene gloves put a little toothpaste on your test spot, rub gently and a little water keep rubbing. Rub till I don't know, it feels good...lol. Wash off paste, bubbles and see what had happened. Repeat if necessary. It works on plastic headlight bulb covers. Hope this helps. Be Good and Be Safe ‼️

im sure ya know the pad blew apart because you caught the edge of the glass ,but yes mothers should have worked but with the buffer, but to be sure test it in the lower section of the shield.or you could use a good rubbing compound but again with the puffer, then use a finer cut compound or possible the mothers to take away the swirls and you may need to do both sides to really see the improvement. then lastly you could throw a little wax on after ,that'll help with the rain.

Brother......thank the gods you didnt try and pull the carbs apart........thats the hardest job there is on the 1500 and it requires way to much cursing. As for the carbs......they require restricted air flow to raise the piston, and will not work right with the air cleaner off. did ya have fun with the large vac line on the forward right under the air tray? thats my fav one to curse at......and it MUST be connected.....or blocked off on the inside of the air box. Biggest issue is extra air getting into the air box, it reduces the vacuum required and youll have zero power. best test........PLEASE try this.........the long air horn that clips to front of air box.......slide cardboard between them and block half of the intake hole. If it suddenly runs great, your sucking air. My last wing i rode for 3 years with the card board in place ......because fixing it right is silly..........................

Running on only 1 carb? When my dad got his 84 Moto Guzzi, he went from Dallas, TX to Wichita Falls, TX and back not realizing that he didn't turn the fuel on for both carbs. When he got home, he took it up to the local Guzzi shop and was told as long as he had oil in the engine, he didn't hurt the bike. With as tough as the Goldwings are in general, I'd be surprised if you damaged anything while running with a bad carb.
