It’s always nice to see home-brew projects, thanks for sharing it with us. I have never seen or even heard of edge-lit displays, they really do look good.

Thanks, Colin! I think they look nice as well, though I can see why Nixie tubes dominated (cost, complexity and maintenance). I enjoy making stuff like this, but it sure can take a long time!

VERY nice clock!! It's so great to see the vintage case, chips, and parts being put to good use in the 2020's. It makes this clock extra special, and well worth the effort. I look forward to the follow up video on the displays you mentioned in a comment. Congratulations on this successful project.

Thanks, it took a lot of work to get this one to come together, and I appreciate your help with the circuit! I just posted the follow up video, if you want to check it out.

Thanks Steve! I have wanted a clock based on them for a long time, and I ended up having to make it myself.

I have never seen displays like that. Almost looks nixie, and sorta combined with an "infinity mirror" (if I remember the term correctly). When you popped the hood I was a little taken back by how large the modules are. Very good that you are happy with a project. That is always very good. If you ever come across a bending jig and sheet metal guillotine you might wanna grab it/them. It would probably make you very happy. It requires room, however. (Caution: First thing guys make -- all guys -- are ninja throwing stars).

Edge lit displays are fairly rare, and they do have a bit of the "infinity mirror" effect, due to reflections between the acrylic sheets. Yes, it would be quite disappointing to have put so much time into something and have it not turn out. It would be nice to have proper metal working equipment (and maybe a 3D printer), but alas I don't really have the space for it right now.

I remember as a kid climbing through scrap aeroplanes and bringing home an edge lit display. It was quite small with a load of tiny bulbs at the rear end.

That was quite an opportunity for scavenging! I haven't seen edge lit displays in avionics, but projection displays seem to have been pretty common as they could display all sorts of custom messages.

@@50sTransistorRadios I used to climb over a wall into the yard with friends on a Sunday. There was no one around so we had the place to ourselves. It was great. We'd be there for hours. Thankfully we never got caught!

@@50sTransistorRadios We did get chased out of the place after about the fifth visit. The man had a shotgun! We were really scared and I don't reckon I've ever run so fast in my life. We never went back!

Techmoan has a few clocks that have modern versions of edge-lit displays made with RGB LEDs.

Ah, I have seen his videos on them, and I actually have two modern edge lit clocks as well, though neither is particularly nice. These displays look much nicer, and are more readable.

And on Banggood, one can get a clock w/ mock-up edge-lit displays.

I have seen modern reproduction edge lit displays proliferating, but neither of the two I have is very good. The displays get washed out easily by regular interior lighting.

And as always we appreciate your help! Nice job on the explanation. Are you going to wake up to this clock every day? just thinking .....I wonder if you could take an extra unused panel in the 10 hours digit and drill a dot to use as PM indicator. Somehow you could possibly block the digit that already exists on that acrylic panel...maybe with tape. The dot would look pretty neat for PM indication. Very nice build!

Nice build. Are the displays a fiber optic lite pipe?
@50sTransistorRadios

They do use a light pipe design, but it's not fiber optic. I have footage recorded for a follow up video showing the insides of one of the displays.

Thanks! I tried to use 1970's parts and circuitry where possible, to keep it as authentic as I can.
