I’m very surprised it didn’t burn on the element. Great job!

Yeah, it never occurred to me that might be an issue. I’ve never had anything stick to the element when Distilling. So I’m either very lucky or it’s because the Wash is doing a slow rolling boil and the Botanicals are in constant motion. Who knows, as long as it works. If you’re interested, and haven’t seen it already, I’ve also made a vid about using Gin essence.

How dose it taste ? Compared the the off the shelf gins yiu enjoy? I've never tried putting the everything in the pot. When I had a similar column as you I put a screen inplace of the top bubbler and put the botanicals in there eventually I switched out to a gin basket with a pot still. But in the pot looks intresting.

I don’t really drink gin but my partner does like a lot of different types and she says it’s amazing and loves it. For me, I’ve found it a little too ‘strong’ in flavour, but it has settled down a lot more since. If I do this one again, I’ll defo try and tone it down by using slightly less ingredients. I’ve infused in the vapour before but I don’t think I used quite enough of the juniper berries. So next time I need to find a balance between the two different ways or the amount of botanicals.

@@highly-spirited yea gin is kinda tough. I've not had the greatest success so far there is alot to balance and get just the right amount. Nothing has been bad but Nothing id brag about either

I put the botanicals in the steam column - that way I can distill about 20 litres with 100 grams of botanicals and there is danger of burning anything in the wash.

The plan was to do another run through the vapour, but we have to drink the Gin that was made in this video before I even think about doing another batch 😆 And I’m hoping for it to be a bit more subtle in flavour next time.

What sort of wash did you use originally? TPW? TFFV? I'm looking to do something similar but not sure if i want to to the maceration technique or let the vapour pass through the botanicals.

I used some low wines and a couple of stripping runs, all from a plain sugar wash using turbo yeast. Years a go I distilled through the vapours and it came out ok, but a bit ‘thin’ on flavours. This was almost the opposite and was defo full of flavour. Both ways work, it’s just giving it a go and finding what works best for you.

Just a question regarding the recipe. Were the ingredients per 1L of spirits or per 1L of total volume (spirit + water for dilution)
@highly-spirited

I see what you’re saying. The quantities I listed at the end of the vid were grams per 1 litre of total wash volume. e.g. 20g of Juniper per litre of what ever was in the kettle (I don’t get too technical if can help it 😆) The recipe is just a plain one, but pretty potent in flavour. So would probably help being slightly reduced on the grams per litre ratio. But it’s all down to personal taste.

Next time, do a spirit run before you do a gin run, you'll loose alot of gin flavour in the heads and tails of your run.

@@highly-spirited you miss understand. Do a spirit run first. Then add the botanicals, and redistill.

21 x 700mL bottles @ 40% ABV = 14.7 litres from 18 litres of low wines? Awesome.

You might not be into distilling, so I’ll try to explain that detail for you. I didn’t get 14 litres of Gin from 18 litres of low wines. Without going through my notes, I probably got something like 7.5 litres of Gin from the 18 litres of low wines. But what has been distilled out is at a high abv. So you then add water to take it back down to 40%. Hence I ended up with 14 litres of Gin. So yes, it was awesome 😎

At what temperature should we distill the macerated liquid so that we get best flavour & aroma without any off notes. Will low temperature such as 50 or 60 degree celcius woukd work or not. Or 80 degree is neccesary for distillation. Hoping for a quick reply from ur side it will help me a lot. Thanks in advance.

So sorry for the late response, as I guess you’ve already found the answer. You will need to get to a temp of at least 75c to start the Distillation process.

@@tydbrokenheart are you leaving the Botanicals in the Wash when you’re Distilling? It might be worth macerating them for a day in the Wash, then removing them for the Spirit Run. I have a feeling the Burnt Notes come from the Juniper Berries, but I can’t say for certain.

@@tydbrokenheart then I would do what I’ve done and that’s to cheat and use a Gin Essence. Have you ever used those before? I’ve found some to have a pretty incredible taste and super easy to use as well.
