This video is really good. I'm remodeling a rental property and replaced 3 bedroom doors. The painter said he could hang the doors but after 3 attempts (and many nail holes/frame damage) I had the young man watch the video with me and we hung the door together. We both learned how to do it and door looks great. I taught him how to educate himself when he doesn't know what the hell he is doing 😂 and you taught him to hang doors. Thanks!

shims should be top and bottom and hinge locations... Also at the latch.... also plumbing the hinge side when the wall is out of plumb ..is dumb.... you could have tacked top and bottom and adjusted both sides for close reveal ... before you shim and lock in one side with nails

if your doing additional mill work for the header to build it up (craftsman style) , what would you have to change to install it ? I will need to be installing 6 shortly.
@huntercarlson5446
11 ай бұрын
The only thing that would change would be leaving your header detail to the last step after the door is installed. I would simply nail my casing legs to the jamb(make sure to leave the proper header reveal at the top) and hang the door the same way. After the door is shimmed and nailed off then work on the header detail. You may need to flex the door jamb at the top up or down to get your proper spacing and reveals to work…hope this helps, thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Great video. I had three solid core doors to install on a remodel this weekend. Since it was ten years since I last installed an interior door, I hit KZitem for a refresher. Came across your video....wonderful. I was taught to hang the door while shimming to level in both directions. I was taught sooooooo wrong, and hanging doors was intimidating. This weekend, they went up so easy and smooth with minimal issues. Thank you. Dave

Are 16 ga gun nails strong enough for a solid core door?
@huntercarlson5446
Жыл бұрын
There are different varieties of solid core doors…I would say as a rule of thumb that if 1 person can carry the door into the house and install on their own then 16ga. nails will work great. Once the door gets heavy enough to need 2 people to carry into the house then 15ga nails need to be used for installation. Hope this helps have a blessed day 😎

With the number of trim nails you loving sprinkle about, I assume you own stock in a nail company.......and the painters are looking for your home address. Also wondering what your holdups were for the flooring. Looks like luxury vinyl from the bathroom right into the bedroom.

Haven’t had a problem with the painters since I’ve started…it may seem like a lot of nails. This is a new residential home construction project by DR Horton and the flooring isn’t installed until after trim and paint. That’s just the way the company organizes their schedule, that’s why there isn’t any flooring…tile for bathrooms and carpet for bedrooms… Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Can you use this method when the wall is out of plumb about 1/2 inch from the top of the door to the bottom of door. The old door jamb is still up without the door and cassing is removed, and i noticed the drywall is protruding 3/8 inch at bottom. From a fellow Coloradan.
@huntercarlson5446
Жыл бұрын
Yes you can still use this method! I would focus on adjusting the jamb to plumb after adding shims in between the door jamb and framing. Try to adjust an 1/8” at the top and then that same 3/8” at the bottom. I use my foot for leverage and a hammer to tap and move the jamb at the bottom. Keep a little “squeeze” pressure on the shims that are temporarily holding the jamb so they don’t fall and shoot a couple nails through the jamb and shim once you get your jamb plumb… Hope this helps…sometimes it’s hard to explain through text… Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

I really enjoyed this video. I am a retired trim carpenter from Texas. I think that you did a really nice job. I just have 1 comment that you might find useful. When you're hanging the pre-hung unit. After you've gone through setting the hinge side and the header, before nailing off the strike side. Take a 1-3/4 paddle bit slide the shaft between the hinges and gently close the door " not all the way but just enough to slightly bend the hing." Do this to each hing this will help to establish the margin on the hing side of the door. You might also use your pencil for this as well. Thank you

With the advent of thicker casings I assume the reveals change. We are now doing 3/4 thick 4 inch wide casings as the norm. So hinges cant pinch or the door handle latch plate. We also change door gaps depending on season they are installed. Humidity levels from summer to winter temp changes we have swings of plus 30 to minus 30 can swell doors a 1/8 inch we have encountered and their painted on all 6 sides

This is the first time I’ve ever seen trim installed before the door was installed. I guess it works something like a door jig. I have two solid wood doors that were cut short for an old opening, I don’t want to throw out the doors so I’m going to try to extend them, so I can reuse them in the new opening. I always seem to take on a challenge. Do you have a video on how to install doors that are not pre hung and do not have the door frame installed? The opening I have is like the one in the video, studs and drywall.

@huntercarlson5446
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! In the video I’m using MDF casing so other materials will definitely work! The only thing that changes for me is if the door is solid core…then I will add a few extra nails through the casing to the jamb and then the jamb to the wall. I will also shim the bottom of the door if it is solid core. Let me know if you have any more questions. Have a blessed day 😎
@chendog2615

@@huntercarlson5446 thanks for the reply! Coincidentally I am installing a solid core door. It totally makes sense to shoot extra nails for support. To make sure I understand correctly on shimming the bottom of the door, do you mean to put some shims at the bottom so I the door won’t droop to the floor, while attaching the casing to the jamb and then remove the shims once the casing is attached? Kind of what you were doing with your foot in the video?
@huntercarlson5446
3 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I meant! If you have to lift the door on the hinge side shoot the casing to the wall and before you open the door to shim just slide a shim under the jamb to make sure the door doesn’t shift down and mess up your reveal. If you are installing a door on finished flooring don’t lift the jamb, you made need to cut the bottom of the jamb different amounts to make the door as level as possible…if that makes sense…
