That was really interesting Ja. I also try to aim for about 10kg for all day comfort. I try to stick to natural fibres which restricts choices massively but also keeps things simple. The only way I've found (so far) is to keep items to the absolute minimum. But being in the south of England and generally forest camping I can just about get away with this. You are camping in areas further north and also at greater heights (I'm rarely above 200M) so this gear load out vid was very interesting to me - thanks. Cheers Buddy 👍

Salutations, Jason! Well thought out pack load. Most of my kit is a bit heavy as well. Military surplus mostly. Like you, most of my camps aren’t too far into the bush to warrant those high price tags for ultralight gear when what I have serves me just fine. I do spend the money when it comes to my winter kit. Down filled under quilts and top quilts in particular for my hammocks. Less bulky, less weight, and superior insulation. Thanks for sharing your load out. Cheers. 👍

I’ve recently just brought a brand new OEX Vallo Air 36L (£45 on offer) pack, for my single-night Summertime adventures out in the local Derbyshire Peaks also.. Mine also weights in at 10kg with food/water! 👍🏻 I have a choice of two 1-man tents I’ll be packing in mine though, although I just use one of them as a tarp with no inner or groundsheet inside, and put my sleep system inside my Alpkit Hunker Bivvy. I’ll be heading to the Lakes next though, for a 3-4 night wild camping adventure, will deffo need my 70L (15.5kg) pack for that one..😄

@@SandybackOutdoors Hi J, no worries buddy. Well I have an OEX Bobcat-1 and an Alpkit Soloist XL, both are cracking little tents but do have their shortcomings.. the Bobcat sleeping area was just far to small and claustrophobic with that silly saggy inner tent fitted, which is why I’ve permanently removed it and made other mods to it, so that their are now no gaps down to the ground, I do like large the side entrance on that one though - as this makes it very easy to get in/out of!.. unlike the Soloist which has a front entrance, and the inner mesh door is about the size of a cat flap, which I find very frustrating, and it’s difficult to fit my large backpack inside (which you have to do, because the vestibule only has enough room for your boots and other small items) with me, with it being so narrow inside, other than those issues it’s a great little lightweight tent that can be parked pretty much anywhere! I guess all 1-man shelters are all going to suffer from these little (quite literally) issues though, lol. I was very impressed with the new Derby GoOutdoors Store I must say, so much better with stock and layout than the last premises, and it’s even closer to me now 😃 Cheers, Scott.

Excellent video J, well thought out kit and set up. I've been pondering the advantages of a tarp/bivi set up vs a one man tent. What would you say the advantages are for a tarp set up? I'm just back from an overnighter and used a tent and had forgotten how easy it is to get set up with a tent. It was like glamping lol. I love using a tarp/bivi, but in some places it can be a pain to set up. Would you switch to a tent if it was lighter or are you more into the bivi/tarp experience? Anyway, really enjoyed that mate, thanks for sharing. Cheers, Elliott.
@SandybackOutdoors
2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Elliott, great comment and questions mate 👌 For me the biggest advantage for a tarp and bivvy set up, is that it makes me feel more connected to my surroundings. It's something that I've done since I was a teenager and it really suits my style of camping. I can also see the benefits of tent camping too, i.e greater protection in adverse weather and the ability to basically pitch anywhere that you can fit your footprint. I'm not adverse to tent camping, it's just that I've never really felt the need to do so but I've got to admit that as I'm getting older, it is something that is becoming more appealing and something that I'll probably end up trying as some point. There's masses of reasonably priced tents out there that don't weigh much more than a lightweight tarp and bivvy, so I'll have to do my homework first before I take the plunge. Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks again buddy and hopefully I'll catch up with you and Peanut soon. Atb, J 👍

@@SandybackOutdoors Great answer J. I guessed you might have a reason to favour tarp/bivi camping over a tent other than purely practical ones and staying more connected with your surroundings is exactly why I prefer it too. Being in a tent is definitely easier and more comfortable, but you do lose that connection. I also quite enjoy the process of figuring out how to set up and choosing a configuration that suits the situation and personal requirements, and now I’ve tried using a hammock I would definitely choose that and a tarp over a tent for woodland camping. Thanks for answering. Atb, Elliott.

I reckon you've got a decent compromise there Mucker. Are you happy enough that the BIVI Bag will give you enough protection during the night from Midges/Mossies etc. or, have you/are you considering some kind of Mossie net or other deterrent? I'm currently playing with some setup of my own making and IF it works, you'll no doubt see it sometime soon. 30 degrees C. here as I type at almost 1700 hrs. It sucks the strength out of me.

Hiya mucker, I don't perform great in the heat these days 😡 Definitely prefer the cooler months now. Both of my Snugpak bags have mossie nets and I use them a lot, especially when ground dwelling. I'm planning on using this set up for higher camps above 500m so I should benefit from any wind due to being more exposed. Combined with a bit of the old Skin So Soft, that usually does the trick for me. I'll keep an eye out for your latest set up. I hope that it works out for you. Take it easy Robert and thanks for stopping by, appreciated. Cheers, J 👍

@@SandybackOutdoors Haha, AVON Skin So Soft is a Booty Juice adopted by the Bootnecks in Arbroath and sworn by them to work. However, SNOPES (the Internet Myth Busters) reckon it is all Gateaux. I'm in British Army Lightweight Desert Pattern Kegs and the Mossies whilst sitting down at my evening walk camp with the dogs, simply bite me through the thin material. I'm also unlucky insofar as, I'm Blood Type O+ the most favourite blood for the blood sucking female Mossie. They might stagger a little after sucking on me, but their bites still bloody itch. 😒
