He tuned half-step down (E to D flat, for instance), I suppose because his strings were so heavy. My brother-in-law went to high school with him at Kimball in Oak Cliff (South Dallas), although he quit school young and moved to Austin to follow his brother Jimmie, whom I saw play the first time with his band “The Fabulous Thunderbirds”, opening for ZZ TOP and The Rolling Stones at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Halloween, 1981. Stevie was backstage, I heard later. I saw him many times from just in front of the stage in Austin and Dallas. Watching him play was like going to church. He closed his eyes and tuned into the source of all music, held on, and let it flow through him. He never ran out of ideas. Everyone knew that it was not humanly possible to play like that, so in that way it proved the existence of God to us. You’d leave the show drenched in sweat, exhausted, and grinning, knowing that God was near. I don’t know how else to describe it.

Stevie wrote this song after a friend died & he wrote a few others inc Pride & Joy, Lennie amongst others despite not reading music ...he was fully self taught by experience....i think the only fully complete package was Elvis ( except his was re singing), both unique and taken way too early 😕 Love this song...he makes the guitar sing in a way no one else does (Hendrix is on same level but played it differently...neither worse nor better, just different😍) I cry thinking of SRV potential & its easy to say oh Claptons the best etc coz he's been inductrd into the hall of fame 3 times but he has actually survived to achieve this!!!! Poor Stevie didnt....RIP Stevie ...you deserved better 💞 Nice reaction...theres a few interviews of SRV on youtube that are interesting

I love this song. It is written for his friend Charlie Wirz (?) who died. The guitar he is playing with the hula girl on the back was built for him by Charlie - and that is what Stevie named this guitar.

I was blessed to see him when I was in Highschool here in San Antonio. His brothers band (The Fabulous Thunderbirds) opened up, then he played, then they all came out and jammed. It was an incredible experience. I've been a lifelong fan ever since. I pity all the people out who never had that chance. I know you hear it all the time, but it is my opinion that he was the greatest of all time. Enjoy this journey, because it will stay with you for the rest of your life. I've seen him live. The last time was with Jr. Wells, Buddy Guy and the Stray Cats were in town and Brian Setzer showed up and played. The old Antones in Austin...they picked the drinks up at 2am then played till 4am. The back screen door...lol...I talked to Clifford (Antone) a few years later at the new Antones about it, he had pics and we went in his office and he showed me photos from that night and we talked about the 'good old days' of Austin when Austin was Austin. True story...Brian Setzer was leaning against the wall and I went over to talk to him. He said, 'I want to play' so I told him..'go up there and pick up a guitar'. Jr. Wells wasn't too happy about it all but...that's how it happened. That was one of ...many times I saw SRV. Too many to count. Before the world knew him, Austin knew him. Really nice guy too.

🤠I was very fortunate to have seen him perform live at least a dozen times in and around Austin and Dallas in the '80's. He was, and always will be, my favorite musical artist. I cherish the personal photos I took of him, the autographs, guitar picks, posters, news clippings, etc... as my prized possessions and will pass them down to my nephews. Although recordings and videos just don't do him justice, I'm still so grateful that we have these to watch, listen, and share together. THANK YOU for helping to introduce him to a new generation! SRV will live forever!!! 🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍🤠

I fell in love with him, if you know what I mean. I have never been more enthralled by a human being until Stevie. In 94 when my son was born, my wife and I named him Stephen Ray. I have everything he ever recorded. I have framed photos, guitar picks, gold records, a backstage pass, and an invitation to a guitar clinic he was holding in 1985, which he failed to show up for. Stevie was inhuman IMO. He walks among the Gods now.

@ 🤠Thank you for your touching reply to my post JoPa. I completely understand and agree with everything you said. God bless 🙏 you for naming your son after him. I don't have any children of my own, but I probably would have done the same, even with a girl 👧 , lol (Stevie Rae.) I live in Galveston, so I'm preparing for 🌀Marco AND 🌀Laura right now. But I still hope to commemorate this coming Thursday, 8/27/20, as the 30th anniversary of Stevie's passing🌅. My goodness, it seems like only yesterday. (That means I'm getting old! 😂) In a year with twin hurricanes in the Gulf, a pandemic, murder hornets, racial tensions, a sinking economy, and toilet paper shortages, it's nice to have at least one positive thing to look forward to! LOL! Next week I hope Stevie is singing "💘Love Struck Baby" and NOT "🌧Texas Flood" or "🌪Couldn't Stand the Weather!" I wish you and your family the best wishes. Take care. 👍🎸🎸🎸

I think and I don't think I am alone in this, but one of the things that drove Stevie to becoming an excellent guitarist and loved by many was that his playing was UNIQUE. When you listen to anything Clapton plays, you know its Clapton, same with Hendrix and hundreds of others. And it is not just the sound or the tone, its the ability of the player to connect with your heart and that I think is what makes the great ones great. They hit the right notes that resonate loudly in your mind, heart and sole. Gosh darn it, I miss the players who left this world way to soon. But the good news is that their playing, like Gary Moore and Duane Allman has sparked a plethora of new players with their own sound and for this I am thankful. I miss the ones who left to soon so very much. I feel like I knew them. anthony.

I Saw Stevie Ray & His Band, Double Trouble, Several Times - @ 3 Different Venues In & Around Denver, Colorado, USA - But Most Often At The NATURAL Amphitheater RED ROCKS, Just Outside Denver...This Is Where U2 Actually Made The Live Music Video "Sunday Bloody Sunday" Back In The 80's - & It Was Known By MANY Different Artists & Musicians Of Many Different Genres As A Favorite Place To Play! One Of My Favorite Shows There Was Actually Dire Straits In '86 - INCREDIBLE!🎸 - But Stevie Ray LIVE Was A FAVORITE Regular Summtime Event! I Saw Him There w/Lots Of Other Famous Blues "Legends" From All Over The Southern United States - Also w/ Eric Clapton & Others! SRV, As He Was Affectionately Known, Not Only Did NOT Disappoint - You Rarely SAT Down At His Show....He ALWAYS Spoke To The Audience - During His Song "Life Without You," Who He Wrote For A Dear Friend After His Passing. Then, After Coming Too Damn Close To Dying HIMSELF Of Severe Alcohol & Cocaine Addiction On His 15-Month World Tour In 1986 - He Got Totally Clean & Sober & Even Quite Smoking Completely - He Had About 3 & 1/2 Years Of Total Sobriety Before He Died In A Helicopter Crash After A Show In Late August Of 1990....EVERYBODY WAS SO SHOCKED & SO SAD - Stevie Was Gone From Us But He Left Us CLEAN & SOBER & He Worked DAMN Hard For It - He Was Well Loved & A Really Good Man Who Really Loved People - You Could Always Feel That - & Tried To Hwlp Other Alciholics & Addics To CHOOSE LIF Over Addiction! He Saved, Helped & Inspired Countless People, Including Unknown Numbers Of Other Established & Famous Musicians & Bands, Including His Own! He Taught HIMSELF Guitar, & All The Subtilties Of Playing A Stratocaster, After Being Inspired By His Only Brother, Jimmie, 3 & 1/2 Older, When Steve Was Just A Little Kid - Around 7! Jimmie's Band Was The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He Had Musical Genes But He Was Blessed w/A Natural Musical EAR & Talent & A Burning Desire To Learn By DOING & Emulating HIS Great Electric Blues Heros, & He Ended Up Playing & Recording w/Many Of Them - EVETYBODY Loved Stevie!! He Worked Really Hard For Years To Become ONE Entity w/His Guitar - He Did Not Read Music But He Also Had A Natural Ear Also For Other Talented Musicians & After A Number Of Years & Disappointments - He Formed His Band Double Trouble & They Were Together Til His Death - They Were Also Very Close. It's Interesting To Point Out That Stevie Always Had A Real Problem w/Confidence In His Own Musical Ability & Whether Or Not He Could Play "Well Enough" Or Could Express Himself Beyond His Shyness, He Didn't Want To Be A Frontman Or Singer - Stevie Didn't Like His Own Voice & Didn't Know If He Could Sing....Guess We Know Now! GOD🙏BLESS🙏YOU🙏STEVIE🙏RAY!!🎸❤

My friend played in his Dads band when we were kids and he turned me on to SRV, We lived at the Canadian Border in Buffalo NY and used to go to many shows in Toronto. first time I saw him was at the El Mocambo in TO and i was hooked . Seen him many times after that and was always blown away by him. The last time i seen him was at a tiny outside venue in NY at Darien Lake theme park. Front row dead dead center stage with another great blues man from Texas Johnny Winter. Back then there where no time limits they could play or special sets. Last song of an amazing show cover of Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child. Little did i know that would be the last time , two weeks later he was killed .

@HiddenInAHoodie I was lucky enough to get to see him numerous times in the 80's in every kind of venue...in outdoor blues festivals in several states to the infamous Antone's blues juke joint in Austin, Tx, where I've had a front row table twice. Nothing like sitting 15 ft from him live! That's a verrry small venue for a guitar as big as Stevie's!! He becomes one w/ that guitar & so mesmerizes you that you feel as if u are one with it too! He's truly an anomaly & a super nice & humble guy! Check him out on the Arsenio Hall show w/ his band Double Trouble. He plays 2 songs then does a brief interview w/ Arsenio. Also check out Don't Lie to Me - Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan...it's Albert 'schooling' Stevie!😊 And u would probably like a guy that grew up under SRV's influence named Jonny Lang. Check out his song Still Rainin' (official video) & Walkin' Away (live in Germany.) Have fun & enjoy!!

Stevie always tuned down half a step to Eb and did many songs in Eb, but he did songs in other keys. Such an amazing musician amd person. I saw him at the Iowa State Fair Grounds in 1987 he was clean and sober and was simply amazing. I saw Clapton about a month later and there was no comparison. I'm sorry, it sounds like you are English but SRV was without compare. I read a book on Stevie and his last concert was with Robert Cray and Eric Clapton and Clapton had to follow him and Eric said how am I supposed to follow this. Stevie was at the top of his game when he left us. I remember the day I was at the YMCA working out when I heard the news. Truly broke my heart. I miss him so much. I love that guy. And I can't say that about another guitarist. I named one of my critters Stevie Ray. He has since passed but that was my tribute to someone I truly admired and loved.

Guitar wise, tune down a fret. Then play 'A' and 'F# minor' chords at the start, and you'll get it from there! Watch the 3 feel against the 4 time.

Some one told me the key of G but I truly don't know for 💯 % certain. Size 13 strings the biggest he could get ,they say his strings were nearly base size . Good eye on the guitar swap ,most people miss that and the broken tooth. Stevie was a great man on and off stage . RIP 🐐

SRV was “discovered” by Bowie after his band was booed off the stage as a walk-on at a UK folk fest. Bowie went back stage after the booing and told SRV it was the most kick-ass blues he’d ever heard and would Stevie play on his next single. Oh yeah...

His friends name was Charley Wirz who died of a heart attack. He was a mentor to Stevie and worked on his guitars. The white guitar from this song was named Charley after his friend and the guitar they worked on.

I saw him twice in Sacramento, California in the mid-80s. I was barely in my 20s and very deep into the hardcore punk scene, but we punks LOVED Stevie. He was hardcore! When he played it was as if my skin was being shredded from my body as it thrashed to and fro from the massive sound and emotion. I would stand up during the first song, be transported to other realms, and wish I would never come down. I can still feel it in my cells … He was soft spoken and humble, but oh so powerful … It was crushing when he passed.

Same here. I’ve been into the punk/hardcore scene for over twenty years now but I’ve always loved Stevie. His emotional portrayal of playing a guitar is mind blowing. No one ever did it like he did, and no one ever will again. I hope he knew how much he affected so many people in a good way

When I believed in such things, I really felt like it was God speaking through his guitar. I had the same feeling when I listened to Mozart. I've never seen a musician whose instrument was like an appendage. I've seen great musicians, but not like him.

Saw Stevie in Seattle 1985, my ticket was around $3.00. I can’t explain what’s it like seeing Stevie play live other than to say I’ve been to many many concerts and not one of them comes close to Stevie, also Stevie is very humble loves his fans I actually got to shake the mans hand. I grew up in the era where most people were debating on who was the best guitarist Jimmy Hendrix or Randy Rhodes in my opinion Stevie is the greatest of all time.

Yes, I saw him live once in New York City probably around '87 or '88. It was an outside gig on some pier off the side of the river. I remember thinking WOW that's him when he strummed his first chord. The band played probably 2 hours plus where virtually every song started immediately after the prior one. They were loud, tight and his guitar cut through it all like a razor. Only downside is that it was mid-summer and the heat was unbearable. Can you believe I actually wanted to leave prior to the band finishing because the heat was killing all of us. Amazingly the band played flawlessly despite the temperature on stage probably exceeding 90 degrees. Stevie and the band never complained and were true professionals and yes, he wore the hat!! I honestly appreciate him more today than 30 years ago. Age truly brings wisdom. ;-) SRV was at the top of his craft!
