There's a car museum in murdo South Dakota. In the museum there is an Old quarry truck with industrial air compressor for running jackhammers. In the engine bay it was fitted with some large cylinders or jackhammers. Which turn to crank hooked to the original transmission. So they could move the truck around the quarry .

With the right chemical mix, you could hypothetically do a liquid air fuel for a combustion engine. However I am not smart enough, or well read enough to offer any meaningful suggestions. This experimental air car idea is a very good brain exercise and I hope it bears you fruit.

I don't know if they make them for larger air lines, but a blow gun valve would allow for some decent control of flow and automatic shut off. Otherwise the control valve setup from an automotive hoist offers decent control and can be bought for about $100 if I recall correctly.

The most efficient way to throttle this engine is to use some kind of variable cut-off valvetrain. You can lookup steam engine valve gears for inspiration.
@AirEngineResearch

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The valves are opened and closed by the driveshaft, I need an open and close control valve device that is variable. I'm sure it will not be too hard to come up with one, I just need to figure out how I want to do it while in the driver's seat.

I believe you can get better economy by utilizing a planetary gearset as a cv trans. Furthermore, every 300 degrees celcius you can raise the compressed air temp should double what the air expanse by. You could use a sand battery to help with that?!

That's great to see even if it's leaking because it's been sitting around, yet I'm glad you had help with the installation! Gotta say, I do love the old VW Beetles and the simplicity of most vehicles during the pre-1980's era, it really is where manufacturers should consider going to again in the future. Keep up the great work, and keep inspiring! A couple of thoughts for your controls, I hope may help: Acceleration: For acceleration, if you can find a 90 degree (1/4-turn) and/or 180 degree (1/2-turn) air control valve, then you could utilise a cam (1 or 2) wheel, just as on a carby or fuel injected throttle body on a car, to open an close one or more valves, depending on your air supply. The cam would be run using the accelerator cable in the same manner. 3 or 6-cylinder Activation: For your need to run 3 or 6 cylinders, you could do that using the accelerator control. For instance, if you could use a 1/2-turn air control valve for full control of only 3 cylinders, (I'm assuming for lower powered running or light cruising to save on air) and a 1/4-turn air control valve for control of the other 3 cylinders (assumed for the extra power for accelleration and going up hills), then this might solve that issue. For that to work, both cam wheels would be on a central shaft, but only the 1/2-turn valve would operate throughout the whole 180-degree rotation of the accellerator pedal. The 1/2-turn valve would have a tab on it that would engage with the 1/4-turn valve after half a turn, which would then begin to open the air flow for the remaining 3 cylinders.

Can't wait until that has a high pressure tank and a ball valve on the throttle cable.. just get one of the cng cylinders, they are cheap, big, and rated at over 3000 psi, it doesn't matter if it's been sitting outside for a few years.

@AirEngineResearch I have yet to make my own cylinders, but am going to tackle that challenge soon. My thoughts are to use leather seals. I have used old bike pumps with leather seals that were still easy to get back in working order with a few drops of oil.. Coleman lanterns are the same, and some are fully usable after nearly a century. The trick is to use rawhide, not tanned leather, and shape it when it has soaked in water until it turns soft. Once it drys out, it will harden and stay in the shape you molded it.

Have you considered using a tank of DRY ICE to power this???
@AirEngineResearch
Ай бұрын
Thanks for your thought "With Dry Ice' No I haven't, but it is something to think about? One problem I can think of would be - Just using Compressed Air for a period, things might get frosted up, and dry ice will be a lot colder. Would have to look into what pressure it has when it melts away? I am expecting to run the engine with 150 to 200 psi, but that is my best guess for now.
@robertwestfall7561
Ай бұрын
@@AirEngineResearch The pressure it would have would be based on how much heat were added to it and the size and type of pressure vessel used to contain it. It could produce much higher pressures the having a static tank of air. It would complicate your build but would provide a much greater range that the same volume of air. I Have considered something along these lines myself. It was a great thought experiment.

well for practicality dry ice is a no go. hard to keep long term without expensive equipment,hard (harder than gas) to get, AND dry ice is frozed CO2, now concidered a polutant.

One if the most inefficient ways to power anything is using compressed air because it takes so much energy energy to compress air that getting any energy back out of it is very minimal even a 50 gallon air tank full of 1000 psi would probably get you about two or 3 miles...
