A little bit about wing design. Does it matter what shape it is? What determines the shape? My Rv-12 is a case study. #airplane #plane #aviation #pilot #light sport aircraft
Great content I love learning more about the RV12's. Thank you for posting 👍

Dude, I really hope you keep this series up. I’m getting close to my checkride in the RV12 so stuff like this is really helpful. Reading the POH, training supplement and 912ULS manual is great…but getting technical data in this form is a really nice way to supplement all of that reading.

Very enjoyable video. I really like learning about these things on various aircraft, especially the Van's line up.

The choice to make the wings easily removable was, in my opinion, a big mistake. That decision forced the fuel tank to be placed aft of the seats and forced the pitot tube to be placed at the tip of the propellor spinner. I find the 20 gallons of fuel to be less than I would like especially with the limitations of steep climbs when below 4 gallons remaining. Putting fuel in the wings would provide the ability to increase the fuel load and the useable fuel. There are a few other issues I have with the design of the airplane but overall it flies like a dream, the visibility from the bubble canopy is fantastic, and it is very inexpensive to operate.

In dihedral lower wing generates more lift, since it acts as longer wing span wing, or upper wing rather having shorter wing span "projection", that creates surplus of lift, and rolls aircraft towards equilibrium.

You are correct. Nearly all non-acrobatic low-wing planes have dihedral engineered into the design. High-wing planes less so. Fighter jets and heavy lift cargo planes often use anhedral angles to reduce the inherent stability.

@@rv12sg -- -- Well, French company Mudry(CAP) using Walter Extra's wings coupled with dihedral make for one very interesting aerobatic aircraft. Like CAP-232, and so on... One maneuver CAP's excell at are Snap Rolls(aka Flick Rolls)

@@RussianThunderrr Not to be argumentative, but the profile image of the CAP 232 seems to show an aircraft with little or no dihedral at all - the 330 Walter uses may vary some, that I don't know. I have always wondered what the difference in drag would be of a flush rivet vs the raise pop rivets would have on the design...
@rv12sg
9 ай бұрын
Although I can't cite any specific reference to the advantage of flush riveting, I believe for high performance aircraft the benefit is worth the effort. Perhaps even on a plane like the RV-8 with its cruise of 200+ MPH the reduction in drag helps. I do think, though, that for a relatively slow plane like the RV-12 flush rivets wouldn't matter much. Since the plane is limited to a max 120 knots which it easily makes with less than 100 HP, pop rivets make sense. Your question is an interesting one, though.
