One of my favorite books you mentioned, The Historian. I adore that book and because I am interested in the legend of Dracula as well as Vlad Tempes, it was fantastic. Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is a favorite because I was so in love with the musical since I was a child and then the movie that it was time I read the original work. I was not disappointed and it took me three days to devour. I do have to mention a certain series because I still love the series, not the author, but loved the adventure of it all, HP, it was nothing I had ever read before at that time. Rebecca and To Kill a Mockingbird are definitely faves that I love to read, also I was 11-12 when I read Little Women and am thinking of getting a copy so I can re-read it. I am in the middle of Circe and am enjoying it. I love that she has a story besides of what we know of her in the Odyssey. For me, I think it's also enjoyable because I love Greek mythology and the ease of Madeline's writing style. I now know how Scylla became what she is and that put a smile on my face...lol...karma.

Name of the Wind is the book thst got me back into reading 2 years ago. It was so good and so special but book 2 and the continued delay of book 3 has sort of soured me on it. I wish I could be one of those people who can compartmentalize, but I cannot. Why on earth did we need 100 pages of Felurian in the same book with the incredible Cthaeh chapter?

One of my favourites it Anne of Green Gables. I live not far from where it was set, and I just loved everything about Anne and her story. She was an unapologetic individual who loved books, adventures, and just being true to herself regardless of what others thought. Anne owns my heart, and has since I was little. 🥰

I was so delighted to see Alanna on your list, that series has such personal meaning for me. It was my intro into fantasy at like 10 or 11 and I identified so much with Alanna. I still re-read it every few years. My other favorites are Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (really the whole City Watch series but that one in particular), the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden and the Dragonriders of Pern series (harder to re-read as an adult because there's some problematic relationships in there but I loved it so much as a teen and still have a soft spot for it).

It's funny because I don't think of Dawn Treader as one of my favorites in the series, but when I think of particular moments or scenes that I love, several of them are in that book! also agreed - I'm super picky about journey books but this one just nails it! I totally understand that fear of rereading a book and not having as strong of an emotional connection! I've loved what I've read from Jemisin so far but the premise of The Fifth Season has never appealed to me; but Bethany you are temping me!! I also adored Circe. She felt so human even though she wasn't, and the tone/feeling of the whole book just really got to my heart - like melancholy but not all sad? bittersweet is I guess what I mean Really really loved this video! thank you for sharing these with us, favorite books are such a personal thing and I loved getting to know you a little better through this! 💕

Oh my goodness, The Ocean at the End of the Lane means so much to me too. I felt so much like you did about it. It might be the only book I've read as an adult that I felt an almost nostalgic, deep attachment similar to the attachment I have to my actual childhood favorites, except that nostalgia took years to come about whereas with this book, it happened as I read it and immediately after I finished it, like magic. I don't know if that makes sense, but essentially the love I feel for this book is as the love I felt for my favorite books as a child, and as I am not a child anymore, and my love for books is different now, and that's makes this book very special to me. I think it's a well-liked book, but I haven't come across someone else who felt about it quite so much the way I have. One of the reasons I haven't re-read it is that I don't have it, as my first read was a library copy. I've been meaning to purchase my own for some time, and maybe this is a sign to actually do it. I've also thought about listening to the audiobook because Neil Gaiman narrates his own books and in doing so adds a sense of magical storytelling to all his stories. Not that this one needs it. While I'm here, I should say I recently found your channel and I really love the way you review books. I've subscribed and look forward to your future thoughts on books. Thank you so much!

I liked how you structured your picks. However, for someone who read so much like you I think 10 books is way too little. So, I would like to make suggestions for possible future series: 1. You can do a top 50 for example by alphabetical order. Spread them over 5 videos for example. 2. (I like this better). Start a series called "Books of my life" using the same chronological structure. Start from childhood until now. You don't have to divide them evenly. Do them as you wish. Video can have as many years as you wish, and contain as many books as you wish. I really think this would be cool, probably even for you :) It will possibly push you into a reflective territory though :). You can do this as year long project. From your 10 books I read Circe, and I loved it.

This list is great! I'm probably biased because it's a lot of my own taste in literature. You mentioned being afraid to reread a book because the impact may be different. That's how I feel about "The Historian." I enjoyed that book so much and keep thinking of rereading it, but I don't because it was such a great first read. Also: NK Jemisin is a QUEEN of writers. Her writing is deceptively accessible. It just pulls you in, and when it does, buckle up....

Little Women is also one of my favorites! I got that same copy for my birthday last year and it's GORGEOUS! It really is such a comforting read, as you said. Sadly I made the mistake to reread it while taking care of my dad in the hospital right before he died in 2019 and I haven't been able to reread it since, but hopefully I'll go back to it one day. As for another favorite I'd have to come back to The Mapmakers trilogy by S.E. Grove. I'm not huge on fantasy but for some reason this series in particular hit all the spots for me and it remains one I go back to for comfort every year.

I just did a re-read of Ocean at the End of the Lane (actually listened to Neil's narration). I agree...I had a fear of the re-read since the first read was emotionally gripping. I felt so immersed in the child's world, fears, and experiences. The second read was not quite as impactful...but it didn't take away from the experience. I still love the book and the atmosphere.
