I thought that H&R was called New England Firearms for a while too. I have seen a lot of their Shotguns and revolvers call NEF.
@CloverTac

Eh, it is a little complicated but old school H&R stuff is not the same. So H&R, the OG H&R, went out of business in the mid 80s. Another company kicked off with the designs, machines, etc named H&R 1871. The started branding with NEF. Then around 2000 or so Marlin bought H&R 1871. Marlin was eventually bought by Remington (or rather the partent company I suppose) and now that that particular Remington no longer exists, Marlin was taken over by Ruger. Interstingly enough, during the Remington liquidation, Palmetto State Armory bought H&R, bascially the OG H&R. That is why you are starting to see PSA make some of the OG H&R retro style semi auto rifles. Now... this is all off the top of my head, so take it all with a grain of salt, but should be a fairly accurate explanation of, again, a complicated thing. oh, somewhat interesting side not, the chinese manufacturer, PolyTech, started knocking off H&R once the OG company ceased in the mid 80s or so. 🤣😂

@CloverTac

let me admit first that i am not a H&R expert, just a dude with a collection that has some experience, so could always miss something somehwere. the 158 came before the 88 and usually with the H&R stuff the differences are subtle. in this case about all i can think of off hand would be that the 88 has a transfer bar and the 158 being older does not
@matrox

basically a safety, it is a piece that moves between the hammer and firing pin that transfers the force of the hammer to the firing pin. if a firearm is designed with a transfer bar and you remove the transfer bar, or if it breaks, the hammer will not come into contact with the firing pin, so no bang

I started hunting with a H&R topper .410 shotgun. A good way to learn to hit what you were aiming at! Then my dad bought a 20 gage barrel for the same gun. That was a rabbit getter. Later I got a 30-30 barrel for that gun but could not hit anything at a 100 yards. Great starter gun! Good video!
@CloverTac
11 ай бұрын
you know, i am not surprised on the 30-30. i have quite a few H&R rifles but they came that way, they were not barrel swaps, and they are laser accurate. not to get too technical here but headspace is a big thing when it comes to accuracy and odds are when you are able to just swap barrel around, particularly from one cartridge or shell to the next headspace issues, however slight, are going to come into play. guess what i am saying is, probably not your fault on the 30-30.
@maxpinson5002

I bought one when it was introduced...I had the clerk in the stock room digging for the specific model and it took her forever to find it! I still have the bare frame to that gun, but nothing else as I parted it out to repair one for a brother in law that wanted his dad's fixed up and restored. I been thinking of taking parts from one of my nef's and getting that frame back in action, but not having the same stock style and Marlin stamped barrel has prevented me from doing so. Жыл бұрын
honest answer, find a good gunsmith... unless you are really versed in heavy duty soldering. odds are that was soldered on but not the type of soldering you would do to electronics. 😂🤣 i can't see a gunsmith charging much for that repair. assuming you have kept the lug and have all the parts, it would be a pretty quick fix. now, obviously solder will require heat. the good news is that those lugs are typically far enough back ont he barrel it is thick enough to withstand the amount of heat required to solder, at least for a short enough amount of time to get it done. the bad news is, the finish (bluing) will likely not stand up. for the most part this is going to be under the foreend and not seen but bluing is also protection to keep the metal from rusting quickly. a gusmith would probably follow up the solder job by putting some cold blue treatment on the barrel in that spot. if you are up to the task yourself, cold blue is available at most sporting good stores that have a firearm/hunting department. or you can obviously find it many places online. if you are looking to try something cheap, easy and avaialble, some good epoxy and maybe clamp the pieces together tightly may work. this won;t really harm much but you are obviously gonna have to remove that epoxy if you ever decide to go with the correct way of repair and solder it back. solder won't work on epoxy, duh, right? i hate there isn't an answer like "just super glue it" but hopefully al helped a little.

H&R never really kept good records, cheap stuff doesn't garner a huge collectors market for someone else to complie numbers and with them going out of business, starting back up, being bought out etc multiple times of the years, well that affects the paperwork and data to complie that stuff too. if you wanna hit me up on social media, email or through the website so you can send pics, we can try to figure somethign out or you might try to hit up High Caliber History over on Instagram and see if he can give you any informaiton.

NEF was NEF NEF was reformed into H&R1871 in 1991 after producing gun as NEF starting in 1987 The old original H&R company was taken over by NEF after 1986. The Marlin takeover was after all that, then the Remington takeover of Marlin's assets and them subsequently running Marlin and H&R in the ground followed by ruining their own long time brand, then bankruptcy
@CloverTac

yeah, in my opinion, Remington ruined a lot of companies over the years including themselves. i sure hope the new Remington will just stick to the legacy stuff and be done. the 700, 870 and 1100 were their bread and butter. do those, do them right and i think there is a chance to live up to the legacy of that name. as for H&R that was bougth by PSA during the Remington liquidation and while PSA has told me they do have plans to revive many parts of that line, so far i am not super excited with what they have done with it by only putting out H&R branded ARs.

One of the H&R employees that was on one of the gun forums said that the H&R tooling was scrapped, but I have no way to verify that. I have a couple of Ilion built products, and the care from the original H&R employees wasn't there. I had a new one that was purchased before the dissolution of H&R and the barrel had to have been rifled by an employee smoking crack. Twisted one way and another like a lightning bolt inside the barrel. It was replaced under warranty, but it shouldn't have ever made it past Q.C. Lot of apathetic employees, or asleep on the job The Stevens shotgun is pretty close, but made overseas so I doubt that any of the H&R people had a hand in that. Much like the 870 copies and other overseas copies of more expensive guns

When I was a youngster I gave $75 for an H&R .410 then sold it like a big dummy, wish I still had it. Now I’ve got an H&R pardoner pump 12ga and a Marlin model 200 in .410 bore full choke and it’s beautiful but unfortunately the brass bead was broken off and I need to figure out how to repair/replace that bead sight.
@CloverTac
Жыл бұрын
that marlin is a cool one and yeah that sucks. so depends on whether or not it was soldered on or screwed in. either way you should probably be really handy and have tools or just take it to a good gunsmith. screwed in isn't too touch, just gotta get the old stuff out, chase the threads and then put new one in. with the solder, that can be a big pain and end up messing up the finish too
@BrockNessMonster1991
Жыл бұрын
@@CloverTac - okay thank you for the tip, it is definitely screwed in. Oddly enough the bead is broken off flush but the brass threads are still in the hole. I was thinking maybe I can drill it out and thread in a new bead, I’m just not sure if I’m capable enough without damaging it further
@CloverTac
Жыл бұрын
snapping a screw in bead is a pretty common thing. it is doubtful it is in there very tight, doesn't have to be to snap, likely got snapped from hitting something or something hitting it in a way perpendicular to the threads. anyway, small drill bit and a small ease out would probably get it out. my suggestion is to put a wooden dowel rod in the barrel before you start. that way if you do drill too deep, the wood can give you time to stop and back up before you get into the barrel. now obviously you wanna do this without a choke if the shotgun in question has a screw in choke. you can use some random plier, maybe wrap the new bead with some leather or cloth or something to help protect it a bit while screwing it back in... can also find plastic or rubber jaw pliers. the threads of the new bead will be long to accomodate a variety of shotguns, so once you have screwed it all the way it, take a punch and hammer, go from inside the barrel and smack the rest of the threads coming through off. basically you are breaking the new bead just the opposite way. and from there you would be done. being a screw in, odds are it would be a pretty cheap repair job with a gunsmith. if you have the right tools, etc, the job is pretty quick and easy. i could probably do it in less than 5 miutes easy.
@BrockNessMonster1991

@@CloverTac - oh dang, that’s extremely helpful and I appreciate the suggestions. No screw in choke in this one, just a fixed full choke. There is a local gunsmith in town I may inquire with him and see how much he’d charge me to fix it for me. If it’s outrageous I may just knock it out myself, with the guidance you’ve given me here. Thank you again 🙏🏻

I believe the M200 was built until about 2003. The story I heard was that Marlin agreed to purchase H&R because they were looking to add a shotgun to their line-up. At the time, Marlin's brand was on an upswing and H&R's profits weren't accelerating as hoped, so the timing was spot on for a buy out. Unfortunately, sales of the M200 didn't pan out as hoped for and the model was discontinued a few years after it was introduced. Too bad, because the timing of Remington's buy out of both companies couldn't have been worse....if they could've held out until 2008/2009 (which would've been really tough, considering how many businesses folded during that time), it could've been a boon for both H&R and Marlin and may have seen the reemergence of the M200, as the recession of 2008 brought about an immense uptick in the popularity of the break action single.

@@CloverTac Forgot to add my own experience with H&R shotguns, which you requested in your video. I grew up shooting my brother's Stevens-Savage model 94 16 gauge, but when I was in my 20's, I worked as a mechanic and one of the new guys at the shop was getting divorced and needed some help moving. I was the only guy who agreed. The move was pretty easy as he had most of the stuff in the house moved already. All that was left was the big stuff that needed more than one person. One of the things I found was a shotgun. After the move, he asked how much money I wanted for helping him. I asked about the shotgun and he agreed to give it to me as payment for helping him out. The gun was an H&R 088 Topper in 20 ga. The guts were in a baggie, as one of the parts had broken. I sent it to a gunsmith who replaced the broken part and put the gun back together for me. They also opened the choke to modified (it was orignially full choke). Gun shot ok, but kicked the heck out of my shoulder. Turns out the buttstock left the factory a little shorter than it should've, so when I brought it up to shoot it, I was never able to tuck it into my shoulder. The result was a huge and painful kick. I remedied that with a Limbsaver butt pad, which stretched the LoP to a little over 15". I originally got the gun in the late 80's, but found the Limbsaver about 10 years ago. The gun fits perfect now and combined with the modified choke, has been a pretty sure shooter. So far, I've only shot it at the range, but one of these days, I"m gonna find someone with some dogs and put that little gun up against some Pheasants.
